you over traveled on the hard limit switch ( torque switch ). place a 2x4 pc of wood between the the turret and spindle( it may be your x axis you should know which one was hit ) and gradually crank the hand wheel in the minus direction until you hear the pop of the switch go back in position. hand wheel should be in .001 mode. sounds like you or some one crashed and burned

If this is like a hardinge 8/51 or TT65 you tripped the torque limiter. there is a procedure that needs to be done, which is in the maintenance manual. Breifly, you need to change param 1815 bit 4 to 0 power the machine down and move the axis to home position (move the hand wheel back and for rather quickly a couple of times to make sure the torque limiter resets) if you don't have a manual you can line up the wear marks in the way cover, or use the tool geometry to get it close to previous position. once you line up the home position you can change param 1815 bit 4 to a 1 and once again power the machine down.

Hey guys I cant get the machine out of e-stop so there is no hand wheel movement. I can only move the axis using overtravel release. Dont know what else to do, I took the limtr apart and make sure its ok but the 1006 alarm (Z -torque limtr trip condition) still would not go and machine in e stop. Although it says Z torque lmtr could it be the X axis problem because a tool holder crashed on the sub spindle of the tailstock when it was moving in X and Z or coluld it be the tailstock problem beacuse the alrm also says tailstock breakway. Dont know if anyone can help, would be back to work on Monday to try again or get a service guy in.

I've never had a tailstock limiter alarm on a Hardinge, although they have been knocked out of alignment a few times. :( Z-axis, yes, tailstock, no.

Since you have the OT Realease button, hold it in while turning the handwheel. Once you hear it pop off the limiter, power down, and back up. Home turret. You should be fine at this point.

Post back if this doesn't solve your problem.

EDIT: If it doesn't 'pop', then you will have to try something else.

The procedure "rlabonte" is referring to is for those lathes with absolute encoders. I can give you the easy way to reset zero if your machine has absolute encoders. The procedure in the book is a PITA. Hardinge Bros. gave me the easy way to do it.

Be sure and press and hold the E-Stop RESET button while pulling out on the E-Stop button. You should here your hydralic system power-up then select Z-axis on the MPG(Hand Wheel) and select MPG .0001.Crank the turrent face into a 2X4 wood spacer between it and the headstock casting.
You should be able to watch Diagnostic X-10 bit 4---When bit 4 changes from 0 to 1(also a loud pop should be heard) the torque limiter should be reset.
