Hi, I am pretty clueless when it comes to wood and woodworking, but I am trying to learn. I have my CNC machine up and running and cutting samples with pine.

What type of wood would I used to reproduce this look:

I'm guessing that image is virtual output from Vectric software and not an actual piece of wood, but I like the look of it. Would I use a veneer? Paint the recessed areas black? Use a stain?

thanks, Andy

That is either solid mahogany with the recesses and edges painted black, or it is mahogany veneer glued to a solid black base material. It will look like that either way.

A coat or two of tung oil will give the mahogany that color.

Mahogany veneer on MDF, and paint the routed areas black.
