I'm a complete newb trying to install EMC2 into Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron to control a homebuilt gantry router.

Ubuntu runs well, and installed easily on a separate hard drive on a 2.0 Ghz Sempron 3400+ Emachines desktop with 3Gb of RAM.

I tried first to install EMC2 separately, then also with the EMC2-Ubuntu Live CD ISO image burned onto a CD.

Same error both times: it seem I get a RTAPI error / segmentation error which I have no idea how to solve.

I tried the run from CD option, with the same results.

Then I tried it on a Dell Vostro 400 and it worked just fine. EMC2 seems to do exactly what I need. :)

So I know the Disk ISO burned well.

Still no clue about the RTAPI error on the other machine. Maybe it has something to do with the nVidia card? Both have a full complement of RAM and are running XP Home.

I've tried to fight through that page, but am still swimming in too deep water understanding what it all means.

In a bid to work around this problem I've been looking at the Linux powered Everex gPC2 TC2512 Desktop at Walmart (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=8304655).

According to the reviews, many people seem to have easily installed Ubuntu on it.

Has anyone used it or see any reason why it would be unsuitable for a EMC2 machine? For $200 it seems quite a deal.

One problem with that WalMart machine will be the integrated graphics. Can a graphics card be added? From the spec sheet it looks like the answer is no, but I may be reading incorrectly.

"real time system failed to load.". Not sure what would cause this. I've also had hard luck with an emc install. On that particular machine no amount of messing in the bios solved the problem. However in that case the problem was seemingly random latency errors.

Maybe a good wiki contribution would be a build sheet. Something like;
"Go to NewEgg and buy exactly these components, use exactly these bios settings, and exceptional realtime performance is guaranteed."

Random thought: Linuxcnc.org could sell computers ready to roll. This has probably been considered and rejected for good reason.

Just another thought, I had one computer with windows and the live CD would not work (I forget the exact reason) I took out the hard drive with windoz and put an blank hard drive in and danged if it didn't work and is running my plasma cutter to this day...

At this point I'm positive that I don't know about all the things I don't know anything about when it comes to Linux...

And it could have been the Windoz causing the problems... So take your live CD down to WallyWorld and boot up the computer you want and check the latency... What can they say...

I think your problem is that you do not have Ubuntu booting from the real time kernel. What you need to do is install grub editor and edit your grub so that the real time kernel loads by default. I have installed EMC2 on Ubuntu Ultimate 1.8 and had the same issue when I updated and updates installed a newer kernel. I had to edit the grub and revert back to the real time kernel. Good luck.

There has been discussion of certain motherboards that have on board video controllers that do work well with EMC2. I have this one (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813153092) bookmarked. I don't own one so I can't personally vouch for it.

Yes, sorry for not stating that more clearly. If the onboard video turns out to be a problem, what? No AGP or PCIE slot. Would a regular pci graphics card work? I'm not a hardware guru by any stretch.

Maybe the UniChrome onboard would work. Depends on the motherboard probably?

I'm still curious why the realtime modules fail to load. According to the first line of the kernel messages you are running the realtime kernel. Or at least that's how I read it. Will check my dmesg later to compare if no one responds earlier.

Using a graphics card is sometimes suggested to troubleshoot latency problems. The errors in your first post are a different situation. However something about your hardware could be making emc unhappy so maybe graphics is not impossible. Sorry, ifs and maybes are all I have to offer.

Out of curiosity I used the 8.04 install.sh script. No problems here.

If you have usb devices try again with them unplugged. This is a wild hunch based on some usb weirdness witnessed with 8.0.4.

If the latest ubuntu is not need for any pressing reason, maybe consider trying Ubuntu 6.0.6? This is still the recommended environment for emc2.

The developer(s) who packaged emc2 for 8.0.4 don't really hang out here. Hopefully someone with an answer spots this thread. A post to the emc-users-mailinglist might bring some better suggestions.
