I am currently installing Ubuntu for a dual boot setup. I want to have a good look at where EMC2 is these days. I have only ever done a momentary live CD boot. This time I want to actually drive a machine to see its progress. Looks quite promising

I would say it depends very much on what hardware you have. This is my first machine with servos and encoders and I would never go back to an open-loop stepper system!
In terms of the bells and whistles for the GUI etc. EMC may still be behind some other programs but it's getting there too...
