When we got our machines we got a certificate for kennametal tooling.. I have all their catalogs - and man I'm just blown away by all the choices..

They have some many darn clamping styles that I don't know where to even begin.. Why have a KENLOC, KENDEX, TOP-NOTCH, and SCREW-ON clamping style??

Is there some method to the madness? The kennametal catalog doesn't say what the differences are - as far as quality?

Does it really matter or is it really just personal preference on the clamping style?

Is there any resource to help break down all the data?

cheers,
Paul

Kinda hard to give advice without knowing what types of parts will be your primary focus. You didn't even specify mill or lathe. But based on the items listed in your post I'll assume a lathe.

Top Notch is great for O.D. threading and grooving.

I would also look for Trigon type holders (WNMG if mem serves) a better value in the 80 degree insert as you get 6 usable tips vrs 4 with a CNMG type.

At work I'm the setup lead for 23 lathes and 4 mills, we source inserts from all over, but 95% of the tool holders are Kennametal, they are worth every penny.
