After watching plenty of videos of industrial setups running at crazy feed rates but quite shallow cut depths, I thought I would give it a try on the X2.
I was surprised at how effective it was, achieving over double the removal rate I was getting on my 'normal' roughing strategy. The finish is excellent too.
NORMAL:
Depth of cut 0.8mm
Feed rate 100mm/min
HSM METHOD:
Depth of cut 0.2mm
Feed rate 1000mm/min
I run a Proxxon IB-E spindle at 20,000 RPM with a 2mm solid carbide 2-flute cutter. The only coolant is an air blast.
I also used a 500mm/min 10 degree ramping plunge instead of a straight plunge at 50mm/min. The only downside I can see is greater machine wear.
