I am making my own CNC router, for woodworking. I have used a 3 axis board with 3 motors to run the CNC before, but, I am now building a larger CNC and think I should run both sides of the X axis with a motor due to the increase in weight of the gantry. I would still use one motor for the Y and one for the Z axis.
Is this possible and is it a good idea? Do I use a 4 axis or 3 axis board to drive 4 motors? Do I get in trouble with the software? Can anyone offer any advise? Thank you Bob

Bob - (befreezen - Must be cold there!!!)
I wish I did a 4 axis from the start! I have now upgraded with a second 3 axis - just so I could get 5 or 6!
Consider this:
If not for driving dual motors - if you want to add a lathe like 4th axis - or move into foam hot wire cutting - 4 is the only way.
BTW if its not a rush - the new Gecko that is soon ready might be a VERY good option.
There are quite a few threads on dual drive X axis - Have a happy search!
 Jim
BTW - Welcome aboard!

If I have dual drive motors on the x axis, Is there something you write into the G code to tell both motors to move on the x axis at the same time?

If you use Mach3, then it'll slave the motors for you. Whatever axis is "slaved" to the X will duplicate it's movement.
