Stephanie,
Tauntdesigns is correct. There might be another option so you don't waste money. Find your local tool supplier and see about a gift certificate. Let Him (your boyfriend) pick out what he needs and wants. You will however, have to go with him and make sure he spends the money on tools.. LOL!!
Hi:
What a nice thing to do!
Taunt designs named the good ones. Quality of work is often determined by the quality of the tools. If he appreciates quality (he must since you are his girlfriend) then he will do well. He has at least one great advantage already.... you! :)

Awww what a nice gesture. I did the same thing for my bf and learned a thing or two along the way. :D You are a keeper! lol
I know that Mitutoyo makes Excellent coolant prof digital calipers, they are spendy but well worth it! They last a looooong time. Here is the link...http://www.auto-met.com/mitutoyo/calipers.htm
Ask retired machinist around here or other forums, see if anyone is selling theirs to get a better price.
What kind of machining does he do? The tooling will depend on the trade he is in...but everyone needs calipers to start with :-P
I hope this helps.
