There's so much combined knowledge here, that i learn a lot just from reading threads from top to bottom!
I'm sometimes amazed on what some of the members achieve building their own machines, the designs some come up with & how these gets excecuted!

This place is heaven for likeminded people!

I see what others are doing and "Borrow" their solutions to challenges, plus there are so many knowledgeable people here who will gladly help out answering questions and researching ways to accomplish almost anything in CNC or related subjects. Besides every once in a while you get to show off something you created to people who actually appreciate it. Ron

2 reasons
1- I am building a small 3 axis machine with my nephew and this forum is about the best source of info around.
2 - I am in charge of a couple of NC operators professionally and this forum helps me to speak the same language.

The members cover a broad spectrum, from newbies, to seasoned professionals.
The use of CNC equipment isn't merely a lump of cast iron (or MDF in some cases) sitting on the shop floor. The software & eletronics are the tools/ or bridge from which ideas cross from imagination to the tangible. And with members from so varied backgrounds & from so many places, the imaginations do run WILD! Always something interesting!

Thankfully, people are willing to share tricks of the trade to help others get started. After all, what would the internet be without contributing people.

I'm learning a new hobby from lots of points of view. I've never found a single place where so many like minded individuals can get together and share information. Not only is the level of knowledge high, but it's availability to all who ask, member and non member alike is plainly visible. If all education was this dynamic schools would truly be revered centers for personal development rather than the societal warehousing many seem to be headed for at breakneck speed. Excuse me, I digress....

Thank you for the wonderful exchange of information, and may this site always be so....

There are some new ideas on CNCZone. I have a machine that about 80 percent complete, and although I have worked in CNC field service, I still enjoy the enthusiasm of the people who are building their machines. I do answer some questions for people who are really in need of assistance, and I am incorporating some new ideas into my machine.

I am in school getting my Associates Degree in Machine Tool and work as a CNC operator. I am looking to learn as much as I can, as fast as I can because pushing a start button isn't what I want to do the rest of my life. I want to learn programming, set-up, everything. I am very hungry for knowledge, but it is hard right know b/c I don't understand any of the stuff that is talked about. My CNC classes in school don't start until Summer. So I guess I will have to be patient. Can anybody maybe help me with basics?

Well I am an old automotive tool maker that left the trade 25 years ago. I was enticed into the tool inspection world which lead to computer programing Zeiss coordiate measuring machines and instrument certification with HP laser systems. Took a few classes and ended up being a computer systems management geek.

Now I want to come back to the trade to get those creative jucies flowing again. The computer business is way to dog eat dog, and with all the offshoring of those jobs it has about zero future. I plan on setting up a small business to retire into and have a keen interest in the CNC world.

Took the words away from me. :violin:

The amount that can be learned here is impressive - as long as you come in NOT assuming you already know more or have seen/done more than everybody else.

Seeing what some guys do and make with such limited tools is one of the most impressive things - making most of a CNC machine using a Skill saw and pipe - really cool, innovative stuff. It may not be a Fadal or Haas, but if you are NOT impressed by their inginutity or you don't think what they've done is cool-to-death then you probably won't fit in here.....move along, nothing to see...

When I leave the "make money for the rich, workforce" I want to have my own woodworking shop. My "learning machine" is the first step. The Zone is my text book that will never be outdated. I can't even begin to imagine the what technology will be available in 20 years. But at least I will be aware of its existence when it gets here by being part of this community. I have already taken a interest in lasers.
Baby get your checkbook, I feel a new obsession coming on!

First of all, this is something I can do well. I dont have to worry about failing here, as long as I dont say too much. Its harmless. Its fun. There arent any laws against it (yet). Its interesting. I can log on here and usually learn something new within minutes. Its one of the few things I enjoy doing that doesent seem to bother the animals and the other humans that I live with. Its like Tinker Toys and Legoes with motors. Its fullfilling. Making something yourself that would cost thousands of dollars to buy. Its comradrerie without the risks of intimacy. I could go on and on. Why do people trainspot?

I just stumbled across this place today. I hope I can stay out of here enough to get some work done. Unbelievable amount of information here.

Am a former carpenter turned into a tooling smasher a few years ago, now manufacturing a clamp. Am hoping to learn all I can about servos, slides, drivers, amplifiers, encoders, programming and so on before I die. My clamp has lots of holes that need drilling and tapping. No sooner did I finally get a drilling/tapping machine together and figure how to program the plc, I wound up changing something on a different part and got 4 more new holes to tap and need another one. This time I want to try a looong XY table and computer built with ebay components where possible.

Have run so many screws in with a battery drill in the last 5 years, I had to get a carpal tunnel operation. There are 18 screws per clamp - ten of which are too short to blow feed.

So I got to learn what is compatible with what before I can even start buying stuff. So I guess I'll start checking back posts before asking old questions.

This is a great forum.

regards,

jimc

I'm building (converting) a big Sharnoa mill from tiger III control that was dead to pc control with Rutex drives. This way I'll be able to fix it when it breaks. I have had several bridgeport machines with "boss 5" controls that BP wanted a ton of money to fix.
I also had a Cincinnati arrow 500 with an emerson control that neither cincinnati or
emerson wanted to help with. So, I want to be able to fix it myself. I want to learn about drives and control systems too. There seems to be a lot of very sharp people in this forum that are willing to share their expertise. Thanks to all.

I'm here because the beer is cold and the chicks are hot.

Actually back in the days when I used to teach I would tell my students, if you get only one thing out of each school you attend, your undergraduate degree should narrow down the things you are interested in doing for the rest of your life and your graduate degree should show you how much you don't know about your chosen subject but where to look for the information/help.

Well, this forum has definitely shown me how much I don't know about CNC, but it has really helped me to narrow down my design options for a CNC router and has been a wealth of information and help.

lots of reasons.

1) I'm into the whole open-sorce software thing, so the piles of knowledge that people offer to each other here for free is really refreshing (I'm lookin' at you Jgro! and the aussie who did the control board, but his nick escapes me at the moment)

2) I've always wanted to be able to make complex machined parts for all sorts of other things (r/c, live steam and so on) but my hand-fab skillz are not quite leet. So hopefully I will only have to make 1 (or 2, maybe...) machines by hand, then I will be able to do lots of small accurate parts that I can draw in CAD, but cannot fab for the life of me!

3) It's not laser projectors, which is what I do for a living....

Cheers,
Brad

It's pure entertainment for me, with the odd bit of new info thrown in for good measure. It's nice to be able to get away from the silly board politics that exists almost everywhere else.

oh man.. without reading all of this... why i visit cnczone...

well, i love the people. and i love the open forum. i even like that there are maybe 100 people who post and work together and generate these amazing proejcts, and there are probably 5,000 people reading our work... I think its great the things these people here are doing. I have built 2 fairly useless machines with information i learned here. i could have probablty finished a better machine if i had never found the zone..

All the great ideas here make me keep rethinking my own bad ideas and i am in a constant state of planning and brainstorming.. luckily i can post my brainstorms here for a real critique. from grizzled wisened CNC masters to 15 year old kids who want to build their own VMC with their parents money - CNCzone has it all..

We also have a great international exchange going on. people on the zone obviousely get far more from it than just cnc information.

This is good.

diarmaid I am offended (joke) you put me second.

I had not posted in this thread yet and none of the poll choices fit very well; why am I here? These are listed alphabetically not according to the importance I attach.

Amusement; taking the mickey out of the pompous prigs who think they know everything, especially the ones who think a couple of college degrees confer exalted status. On the other hand sometimes being a pompous prig to see the result.

Corney reason; to possibly help someone who is trying to learn. Nothing wrong with corney.

Relaxation and education; it is more fun than watching TV and I have picked up some good points.

How did I come to be here?
The short version: I was trying to figure out how to use my tiny mill better, and build a larger router.

The long version:
It all started a long time ago.
I had an interest in building things, and took engineering in college. I didn't end up working in that field. I wound up working in well let's say, a special kind of social work. I always built little stuff, and one day I had a hard drive ripped apart, and an old magnet from it wound up on my fridge. I had a coil of wire near it and wound up connecting an led to it and wouldn't you know, it lit up when I moved it fast past the magnet. I wound up building a very poor alternator from scratch and put some fins on it.
I ran across some folks building similar, but better, devices at www.otherpower.com, and got hooked into building stuff.
There was this fellow, Jaques Mathei, a Canadian, who with the help of this other fellow from Texas mounted a router on his CNC plasma table, and set about carving some wind turbine blades. I was fascinated by the process. I wound up getting a small Taig Mill with steppers to play with, as I could fit it in the budget, I used MS Excell to generate the surface coordinates, and exported it to a report in MS Access to generate the G-code scripts. After a few tries, I got good results on small blades.
Here are my first ones from my post at OtherPower: http://www.fieldlines.com/story/2005/2/22/111119/599
During the process of trying to build bigger and better blades, and a bigger machine to carve them, I ran across this site.
Here are some more recent ones from earlier this year:
http://www.fieldlines.com/story/2006/1/9/181658/3402
Automation fascinates me. I hope to learn a lot more about it than I currently know. I have been trying to build a larger cnc router from available materials to carve several blades at once. I am new to this, but am amazed by the things I have seen made by folks here from browsing the site. It is a wonderful resource. Rich

I currently earn a living as a hard flooring Contractor in AZ. I have done this for a dozen years or so and while i do better than just getting by, I really hate the business. It is one of those things where I want to do something different and i really have found CNC machining peaks my attention. I would like to open a job shop locally, but as anyone who owns a business understands you must completely research any new start up before you start dumping cash, otherwise you will fail.
So I come here as a sort of research tool, trying to learn every thing and anything so I can make an "educated" decision as to if this is the right thing for me. so far I just love it and can't wait to get started, but i need to learn more first.
Everyone here seems to be great and I have learned so much so far, I think that even if I do not pursue the business end (though i very likely will) I have just found a new hobby. :D

Hello, I have worked on cnc lathes over 28 yrs. & run manual mills etc. . . I purchased Aarons v-3 photo mill and have been doing the set-up alignment & mach, WHAT a differance this is ! There will be lots to learn here for sure, But my hopes are to start a small busyness in order to break away from my day job and It may sound wierd but i'm hoping it'll be my retirement pkg. I come here in order to soften the learning curve some by absorbing whats available. I have many questions brewing too !

Hey someone said something about Rum & Coke, where is it?

I come here to learn and share Info. Plus there is a lot of humor in this forum. Someone should be marketing the funny stuff in here.

Thank you to everyone who makes this site possible.

It is a real joy to read the posts, share information, and have a few laughs too.

The collected wisdom of the members of CNCzone simply amazes me.

I really struggled trying to find a username that is worthy of this fine site.

I chose Eurisko, a computer program that actually learned from experience.

Eurisko, from the Greek ( I discover )

Well that is a whole lot more orginial than "40fordcoupe" which I chose because A. I could not think of anything appropiate and B. I still like the old fat fender Fords. Anybody know where I can find a 41 Ford convertable for maybe $200??:)

Actually,

It was a toss-up between 'Eurisko' and '91FordF150' .

Computers and Fords.

How could we live without 'em ?

For the free info!

Actually, that's only half the answer... this site has been a great place to find the answers to some pretty rough problems; It's also always nice when I'm able to help someone else out as well

I know a lot about CNC Diamond Machining, but nothing about Milling... I recently got access to a CNC milling machine and the more I learn, the more I am facinated by it... the machine can do anything! and it was sat their not being used!

Because I didn't have the $$$ for MIT. I am In my early thirtys and have already wrecked my hands finding food and shelter in my teens and twenty's but I still need to build even though I talk for a living ( I make a bad sales man don't seem to care about money enough to steal) so I am working on my own machine. most days I come for insparoto cause my 3'X4' monster is starting to get the better of me.

I visit this site as an highly experienced advanced cnc machine shop owner(to toot my own horn)
of a couple of years now. I say a couple of years now refering to the purchase of my HAAS VF2 and Leadwell machining centers and quitting my machining JOB. So I guess I am only highly experienced and advanced at the machining part. I visited this site (one of many) looking for companies that were looking for quality work. I have found one. The rest were, in my mind only looking for the absolute minimum pricing. I can not blame them for looking for absolute minimum pricing I guess but I thought I was close to the absolute minimum. I was way way way wrong. I am on manufacturing quote and have been awarded 12 jobs totalling less than the cost of manufacturing quote.(5500.00) And have seen the EXTREMELY LOW awarded prices of the hundreds of quotes I took time and effort to put together. I think instead of being a good machinist I should have been a "better" sales man. But I have found that I am not "good" enough at being a liar for that.(Sorry to all the sales people with good morals and actully believe what they are saying). To get back on the subject I visit this site looking for people that are looking for quality CNC machine work and realize that price is not the only determining factor. I wish I could give the lowest prices to all of my customers but I might be better off working the cash register at the local drive through. I am planning on keeping my morals and machining parts for those that know the difference between the lowest price and selling out.

I come here cause, I know nowt. The more I read the less I feel I know. I have to come here, as in my world chaps dont even know what cnc is. It's good to know that around the globe people of similar interests and stratospheric (???) knowlage can feed nogggin with answers, when I only just understand the questions. Iv'e got a Syil super x3 cnc and as any one in my position will know its a very steep learning curve. So I come here cos The CNCZONE exists, with out it I would'nt even try.

The reason I come to CNC zone isn't on the poll options.....
I have a general interest in CNC, and am looking to p/u an affordable CNC burn table some day.

To get knowledge and knowhow from those who are better than myself. I am constantly amazed at the wealth of knowledge on this site and the selflessness of those who are kind enough to share it :)

I own manual 2 mills & 2 lathes. If I get profisiant at them in the future I would be wanting to convert or buy CNC machines, for duplication purposes as a hobby................

Its great to have a site that has such good information & helps people avoid the pitfalls of bad programs or machinery.....the hobby is expensive enough....

And its great to see how people work through issues as machinists.

Something that is sorely missing from our educational system........THINKING through a problem

IN a sense, to share/resurrect some of the past. Oh, aNd to pick on the "kids".

I grew up in a period of engineering when you were expected to KNOW how to solve problems. I had whitewall haircut, pocket liner, slide rule carrying bosses who put you thru an inquisition when it came to design reviews. The better you were prepared before you asked a "stupid questjion", which they had no hesitation in pointing out to you, the less you'd feel the wrath of the managing "gods".

Survived it and got GOOD raises as long as the hard asses were there. Came to the point I thrived in it. When they passed on, literally, some new "kindlyier and friendlier" bosses cam along and the old didn't meld with the new.

I never did lose the old ways - they serve me too well and actually forced me to mvoe on where I thrived even more. Poor bedside manner but the stuff I engineered WORKED.

However one evening, many jobs later, I got the ultimate compliment in my life over my old school ways of teaching and demanding performance from my "students'.

We're at a Christmas dinner and this one kid who I really picked on, came up and thanked me. He thanked me for being an a$$hole to him during the various traning semindars I put on that he attended. Slightly amazed I asked "why?"

"simple, because iirate customers are worse than you ever are/were. WHen that sort of things happened, I'd ask myself 'what would NC do/ask/say?' and it would usually calm the guy down and we could then reason things out".

I was never so humbled in my life.

SO to the newbies I often rant off on, take it for what it is, a voice/personality out of the past just trying to get you to think and reason for yourself. My students have pretey much always rose to the occasion when push came to shove and even thrived under pressure. IT was usually less than I put them thru....GRIN.

I almost died last January, Had that happened, my legacy would have been my well intended rants on the Zone.

Hi everyone

well to start with i was looking for some plans for a pantograph and found my found my way here. Looked like a good site with a lot of info about building a CNC router
I have read probably a thousand posts some several years old.

There a lot of really talented people here willing to share most of what they know. I enjoy learning new things and have learned a ton from reading a lot
of stuff here.
I started my life as a machinist in 1952 as a machinist apprentice for the UPRR. Started my own business about 10 years later and ran them until I was 60 and walked
away and never looked back.
I have went through several hobbies since, building computers, building Dulcimers, a lot of target shooting, I have found on the zone that there are not
only talented machinist but several have the same interest as I

I also build and fly RC airplains which a lot of members here do, so it is a all in one site for me, it is just like a big magnet that keeps sucking me in every
day.
