View Full Version : New Machine Build My DIY Cyclone dust collector
Swets 01-28-2008, 06:12 PM Hi,...
First sorry for the bad english, I do my best...
I make a Cyclone dust collector from 7 PET(?) bottles ....

and it really works very well....

rlrhett 01-28-2008, 09:35 PM Nice! How about some details? Where did you get the bottles? How did you attach them? How did you know how long to cut them? There appears to be two stages, how do they work?
BTW, why the porn music?
CNCadmin 01-28-2008, 09:57 PM Wow, yes please more details!!!!
mlaws1172 01-28-2008, 11:14 PM VERY COOL!

i search the internet and found a couple dust collectors like this one:
http://billpentz.com/woodworking/cyclone/images/ClearVuelogo3.jpg
but all much too big.... but they all looks like a bottle.... so I look for a bottle that looks like the big dust collector....
and i found (in the netherlands) a bottle from Barleduc water that look the most .....
in the bottles is a line 2 cm from the bottem, and i all cut them there....
the bucket is from a eat store (also for free)
i make a drawing and i try to explain how it works...(but I'm not so good in english... so it is not easy..)
http://www.arjan-swets.com/cnc/stofzuiger/werking_stofzuiger.gif
the brown parts are MDF. Green is de dirty air... purple is de clean air flow...
on top is a old motor from a vacuumcleaner...
and in al the bottles i make this.... :

i hope i explain it better this time.... and the music... yes.. its in pinnecal video 11.... and it had dust in the title....
to make the helix(?) I did make something on my cnc machine...
http://www.arjan-swets.com/cnc/stofzuiger/mal1.jpg
What is the helix and the tube in the middle from?
How did you attach the parts? Glue? Heat?
Thanks very cool. Looks like a Dyson vacuum cleaner.
lovebugjunkie 01-29-2008, 12:03 PM Very nice Swets. Greta idea on using the bottles.
I notice your fan exhaust is to the room. Do you plan on putting on some kind of filter?
I have the mini cyclone from Clear Vue and use a shop vac for the suction. Not much makes it to the shop vac but what does is very, very fine dust similar to finely ground flour when you touch it. I plan on putting a Hepa (sp) filter in the shop vac.

the helix and the tube are plexiglas... i hope that it have the same name in english....
and almost al the parts are attach with glue....

thats a idee , a filter ... i make that only for connecting the 7 tubes to the vacuumcleanermotor....
Swets,
Thanks for the reply. I may try one of these as well. What size is the plexiglass? I may use a fluorescent light safety tube. They are about 1.5" or 38mm. (Did you make the helix of the plexiglass material) or is part of another bottle? )(Edit: I see that now) I think I could cut a bottle and unroll it and cut the helix from that, or buy a sheet of polycarbonate or PETG material.
You could connect a filter just to the exhaust side of the vacuum pump just to catch the fines that may still be in the air.
BobWarfield 01-29-2008, 05:13 PM Swets, cool project, very ingenious!
The plexi was heat formed over the wooden bucks to make the helix. I need to fool with heat formed plastic more. First Hoss did stepper covers and now this. Seems to be a lot of potential there.
Best,

eloid 01-29-2008, 07:51 PM like to get some info on the bottle length and size ie diameter..and how long the in helical tub is etc
crocky 01-30-2008, 06:50 PM Looks nice, almost makes me want to remodel my cyclone and incorporate your drink bottles because it is nice being able to see what is going in the big bucket :D
Well done :)
http://www.ocm.com.au/cnc/cyclonic.html is how mine works :)

bryanrabb 01-30-2008, 09:04 PM that thing looks like an over grown dyson vac. Not bad.
bajaru 02-07-2008, 06:08 PM Please forgive me if this is a dumb question... At the funnel part of the bottles, the dust simply falls into the bucket, by force of gravity? I saw the video and saw that it does work, but why doesn't the dust get clogged there?
-thanks
jckstrthmghty 02-08-2008, 09:02 AM Yup the dust just falls due it higher wieght/density over air. We all know the center of a vortex has little disturbance and all the heavier dust particles are forced to the outside of the walls and downwards leaving only air in the center to be drawn up and out to the exhaust. The dust has no where else to go but down.
Hope this makes sense.
Great design. Only issue I can see if large object are sucked in. Might block one of the funnels. Then again it's only supposted to be a dust seperator and not a shop vac.
Swets 02-20-2008, 04:16 PM like to get some info on the bottle length and size ie diameter..and how long the in helical tub is etc
the bottle length is ...27 cm... and the diameter is 86 mm
helical tub are... 1 meter/7 =14 cm... the tube I use is 30mm in diameter...
wolfdagon 04-25-2008, 01:58 AM Very nice. Are the bottles plastic? Is that a 5 gallon bucket for the bottom of it?
CanSir 07-19-2008, 07:28 PM These exact dimensions probably aren't critical to the operation of the device, but just to have all of the dimensions in one place....
What is the diameter and thickness of the plexi tubes that are inside the helix? How thick was the plexi that you used on the helix ramps? Did you just use a heat gun to heat-form the helixes over your wooden forms?
BTW, Dasani water bottles over here in North America appear to be very close to what you used. The taper to the neck of the bottle isn't as uniform, but I'm hoping that they'll still work.

I look to all the other i found on internet. like this one:

and only try to make it smaller......

I love the dust collector, Most of the factory made ones are way to big for my shop.
grahamweekes 08-10-2008, 06:17 PM Hello Swets,
very good machine and I particularly appreciate the recycling of plastic bottles.
Your English is ok, wish I had any Dutch (or even Frisian) :)
Does the cyclone catch fine dust? If not a paper/fabric sub micron filter would be useful to remove the particles dangerous to health especially if you cut mdf.
Regards
Graham
