The usual implement for lifting the milling head is that torsion spring arm arrangement, but that's not good enough for me. I want the same action as on a drill press. You know with the right stuff to lift it to where you started. What about two 50lb lift gas tubes mounted to the side of the mill head? Help, I really hate the present system.

What about roller chain and weights? Or a pneumatic cylinder with a vented regulator. CNC machines have either of these and they work perfectly.

Any pictures, they would help answer your question!

I have a gas spring on mine. It is a 30 pound model. Works nicely.
