I am looking to buy a small multi-machine tool and smithy has been the one i've heard the most about. Are there any other three in one machine tools that have performed well? Smithy seems to have the highest workpiece capacities out of the ones i've compared.

The only good thing about a multi use tool is the idea :D

If you are planning on making frequent use of it, or performing complex tasks that require frequent changeovers of the machine from one mode to the next, it will get old real fast. Then you'll be looking long and hard for the next suc...buyer who also thinks they are a great idea ;)

Seperate lathe, mill and drill (or a mill-drill is ok) would be my recommendation.

Multi purpose machines are popular for people with limited space. A lot is made about having to tear down setups to change from lathe to mill, but with seperates you will usually have an old setup on one or both that will also have to torn down to start a new project. Seperates can also add up in extras big time- 2 benches, 2 coolant systems, 2 DRO's etc.
