I just need to know where to begin? I have a 7 x 12 mini I have the parts to convert it to CNC. Now I need to know how to take an Idea in my head and transfer that to a computer file( how or in what to I draw it). I plan on using mach 3 to run my lathe. Help??? Is there some reading I can do to understand all this?

in terms of putting your ideas into an actual part. first start with a hand sketch. once thats done to your satisfaction you can then draw and detail it in a cad program. from the cad program you can then create drawings. from the drawings you can create a program to run on your cnc'd lathe.

if you want i can help with the cad and program writing its not that tough but can be very trying for a beginner. also once you see a few programs its easier to pick up how to write them. you can pm me for more info, also depending on how complex the part you want to make is you may need different tools.

If you don't mind my asking; Where did you get the parts for the CNC conversion? I would like to convert my 7X10 HF lathe to CNC too. I have motors and a 2 axis driver, I just need the motor mounts and details. If someone makes a kit for this lathe that would be perfect as I don't have the time to create the parts for this. Thanks

I got the parts from JFetting on here. He may see this and respond.

I've seen his site but it says the kits are no longer in production. I don't have time to make the parts from the plans although they don't look too hard. I may be able to have a fabricator friend do it. I would rather have bought the kit so I can get down to machining.
