View Full Version : Convert Taig Mill into lathe?

I have a CNC taig mill + taig lathe tailstock.
I was wondering if I could take the headstock off the Z-axis and mount it on the x-y bed and use it as a CNC lathe.
I was thinking about mounting a tool post on Z axis and lower/raise the toolbit along Z-axis and move left/right on X-axis to simulate a lathe.

Do you guys think this would be possible at all?

Shows the stock mill used as a lathe. As long as the work is short...

Heres another one I just posted.
you can do longer parts with this setup.

It didn't require any modifications at all simply swap some parts around.

Thanks.
This is what I wanted to do.
How did you setup your motor? Did you turn it side ways and attached it to the x-y plane?

I didn't move the motor at all,
just slide the head stock off the dovetail, remove the dovetail from the Z axis and bolt it down to the table and slide the head stock back on,
The tool post is bolted to the Taig riser block which is in turn bolted to the Z axis using an existing hole.
All stock Taig parts and takes less than 5 minutes.
The first time it required some set up within Mach 3 turn configuration.
I swapped the pins of the Z axis and X axis and disabled the Y axis.
If I was going to use this on a regular basis I would make a heavier mount for the tool post instead of 1 bolt through the riser block but I'll hopefully get around to converting my 10 x 18 lathe to CNC.
This was mostly just playing around.:wee:
