View Full Version : Lubricating ways

I have a TAIG Mill and have yet to find an ideal way of lubricating the axis ways.

I started with a traditional oil can, however, it squirts way too much oil and is a bit imprecise/unpredictable. I then tried a Syringe (both with and without a hypodermic needle) - which I thought would be great but, unfortunately, it too is difficult to control the flow because of how small the hole is and because the oil is a much higher viscosity than the syringe was intended for.

Does anyone have any better products? I've got to imagine there's something out there...

Thanks.

one a little larger note than the syringe how about a marinade injector like they sell at the grocery store. The really cheap ones have just a hollow tube going through it without a point on the end. Dont work to good for injecting meat but there should be less resistance that having to shoot it out the hole in the side of one that is pointed on the end. Just my 2 pennys though.

I like that idea... I'll have to swing by the grocery store and see what I can find

Slide oil is kinda thick for a thin spout, I use Mobil Vactra #2, but it brushes on nil problemo.

Mobil 1 10w-30. Had some and wont use it in another motor so works great for machining. Feedscrews, ways, even tapping and cutting work well. I also use white lithium grease on my ways when I go through a full teardown.

Probably works well and I am just a sucker for Mobil's fancy sales pitch :)

max dont think we get marinade injectors in the uk ,might be wrong tho
robin try getting some small air fittings and building a small gravity fed system
few pipes fitted to slideways should suffice with a small resavoir on top of your
column mind and fit a tap/regulator
used to strain old 10/40 for oiling chains might be light enough for machine slides
maybe a thick oil might be better?

Put a short length of flexible plastic pipe, of a suitable diameter, straight on the end of your oil can spout.
