Im sure someone has tried this, but I cant find any builds with it?

I would like to try this on my machine, it has a working area of 450x450mm and is driven by nema 23 like steppers and a M8 threaded screw
It can cut aluminium pretty nice as it is now.

I would like to know what kind of belt i should look at? how broad?
I have looked at some belts called AT3, polyuretane with reinforced steel cords there is an ATS3 too witch is stronger.

What performance can you expect with the right belt, if you compare to
trapetzoidal screws for example, or my current setup?

I've built my machine using timing belts. Ironically, it is about one day from completion after 3 years effort and I'm having to box it as I am going overseas!

May I ask why you are replacing the threaded rod?

I took the timing belt path as it lends itself well to large footprint (whip on an 8 foot threaded rod would be very impressive) and I think it is an easier design to rack and pinion.

With respect to accuracy, the drive pulley is about 30 mm dia. which gives a circumference of 94.2. At 200 steps per rev. gives .047 mm and geared at 3:1 gives 0.18mm per step.

Ynneb has also used timing belt and his machine is viewable on-line.

There is a small commercially available machine like this.

I have seen the site but do not have a link and can't remember who does it.

Maybe someone can chime in and remind me. :)

It has the controller in a drawer under the table and is all anodized aluminium.

I am about to complete my table, minus the "X" drives which have to be belt driven because of the length, I'll let you know what I decide and post some pics of the setup once complete. I'd love to see any feed back as well.

The reason i want to change is that the threaded rod was a budget choice, it works fine but now there is some backlash and its not possible to get some good speed with the fine threads.
And i rather use my time to improve it than fix the backlash, and then fix it again in some time.

Ballscreews are to expensive and rack and pinion is quite expensive to.

Timingbelts are also almost no maintance, and no backlash, i think :)
And quite cheap if you buy them cut in meters.
