I have used versions 7 through 10 of Turbocad with Ace, no problems. Just make sure you explode your polylines and save as R14 DXF.

is the text that desk engrave saves as a dxf file lines and arcs?

I can't see there being a problem importing the desk engrave dxf into turbocad, but why would you want to do that? You could create the text in Turbocad in the first place, explode it twice, then export to Ace. Alternatively, Desk Engrave outputs g-code anyway?! I don't have it installed at the moment, but if it will help you out, I will get it tomorrow.

i am contemplating getting turbocad.

i just wanted to know how it reacted with desk engrave. and ace converter.

i am thinking of building a small cnc router to do make nameplates and plaques and such.

lines and arcs make for shorter gcode programs.

Not sure if you have this option, but R12 .dxf will usually be a bit more universal. The newer versions support different entities that not all packages will read.

Today I was working with DeskEngrave and Ace converter. I managed to accomplish this by selecting chiller font and then entering values for feed rates and all the other variables. I saved as g-code and ran it directly through Turbocnc. I didnt use the Ace converter to do this although I tried some other things unsucessfully with Ace converter.
