Glad to see it here.

Know of any good hobby shows coming up in the Peg? I'm thinking of displaying my little cnc'd mini-mill. Might be a good way to see how much interest there is in cnc at the hobby level.

Signing in like"Hi
i am bob&Doug Mckenzie from The Great White North"is not good enough. If we state our experteze such as Hi,I am larry from TO and I only know of epoxy and composites.Or Hi I am kevin from Vancouver and am an expert at CAD&Cam,we could pick our collective brains and help each other.Canadians need a boot in the a^% to get motivated.Brack,I'll open another Canadian{Molson] and watch the Game.

vulcom1 12-01-2007, 03:19 PM Larry,
I agree with you but also noticed you never gave any info either.
I am from a small town and I have been an RC modeller since 68 and I have several hobbies which all come together to make things easier. I have a mill/drill and an Atlas lathe and tinker in electronics. My first jump into CNC was my foamcutter and my next is the mill/drill. This is mainly so I don't have to turn the wheels as I wrecked my sholder 5 years ago. My current projects are a KJ66 turbine and making a dynamic balancer for it. Then it will be onto the mill/drill.
A couple of pics of what I am into.
John
lgalla 12-01-2007, 03:57 PM John,your right.I didn't say to much.
You post reminded me of modeling from the 60's.Ever had a Dyna jet?Mccoy red head?Cox?
Super Tiger and used nitro,Misselmist? So much for a blast from the past.
I do woodworking mainly loudspeaker cabinets and know a bit of composites. My main posts are in the Epoxy Granite Machine Bases.I would assume now a days composites are common in R/C modeling? Can I be of any assistance?
Larry
gerryv 12-03-2007, 07:35 PM Larry,
It looks good... what is it? Is it made from a composite material and how do it's spec's compare to say gray cast iron and run of the mill aluminums - in laymans terms.
I ask because I'm thinking about building a smallish lathe/mill combo (Yikes, one of those!) That is to say, one with reduced swing so that I don't have to deal with the PITA of redoing setups.

syil canada 12-04-2007, 11:56 AM Calgary here, im all in!
Langley, B.C. - Trying to get my own small router machine built, but currently distracted by my job building a VERY LARGE commercial 3 axis machine. I have all my machining done and lots parts and pieces waiting for my brain to clear. Will purchase my motors etc. soon in the New Year. I think developing a Canadian community is a great idea, no matter what you call it!
What I would really like to see is a list of Canadian suppliers so we can cut through the import problems!
gerryv 12-13-2007, 08:49 AM The biggest of which is a certain courier that is gouging us on fees to the point it likely gives them a competitive edge in getting the accounts down there. I doubt that most US suppliers realize just how much business and goodwill they actually lose because of this courier in particular.
I agree about the supplier list by the way. Maybe if there were enough of us who decide to do more than just "lurk" we could even work towards forming a buying group where we could get industrial/commercial discounts from certain suppliers and an alternative courier?
Hopefully, this thread will get some response beyond "I agree."
gerryv 12-13-2007, 08:51 AM Hi CSRC,
Should you maybe post this as a new thread to get people used to looking beyond this thread only?
dertsap 12-13-2007, 04:32 PM The biggest of which is a certain courier that is gouging us on fees ."
are you refering to UPS :) skinkin bunch of gougers (nuts)
gerryv 12-13-2007, 04:53 PM You sure got that right! From personal experience, it sure does NOT stand for UPStanding! (nuts).
Unfortunately, the only ones that can fix it are the US suppliers and it seems that a lot of them don't figure they need to do anything to keep the Canadian market but I'm finding that I'm now getting some good choices out of the EU. Too bad really, you'd think it would be a no-brainer.
lgalla 12-13-2007, 05:30 PM Use USPS whenever possible.Think UPS is bad?Try FedX.4times the cost.UPS is charging brokerage fees of $50.Brokerage fees are the same no matter the value of the shipment, weather one dollar or ten thousand dollars.UPS is also collecting GST for the government of Canada.
If you use USPS sometimes the parcel shows up at your door,no extra charges. If not,you will pay the GST and about$8 handling charges.

I agree with the USPS comment being the best way. Perhaps the moderator can suggest how best to post so that the suppliers will respond and identify themselves and also how best to create a reference.

woodman08 12-19-2007, 12:28 AM I agree UPS is terrible ,the only reasonable way is the post office I have ordered through them takes a long time but you're treated with reasonable costs.
But all this might change the cnc interest and purchase is rapidly changing and i think you will find supplies available soon.
I was going to buy my machine in the USA (shopbot )then a dealer matched there machinery and I bought here in canada

when i saw you posting again , i thought how childish .then i remembered children come on here as well ,i couldn t imagine an adult could be so stupid or ignorant ,so it must be a kid .
i'm sorry lil fella ,i'm not saying your stupid or ignorant ,i just think you were never taught proper manners ,if you don t understand what that means then maybe you should ask your mommy when she gets home in the morning from the bar .
i see your user name is mastercam master , obviously you would like to be a machinist when you grow up . pay attention in school and study up on your math , speaking of school you may want to ask your mommy to put you in a better school because it's quite clear the school your in is failing on you .
don t worry lil guy i'm sure that you will be well on your way to being a good machinist when you grow up and venture from home to find another trailer park to call home ,and don t worry about what the old guys have to say around the trailer park because i'm sure you will be a man before your mother reguardless of what anyone says
post within the forums if you ever have a question in reguards to machining ,
i'm sure there would be a lot of people willing to help fill that empty little head of yours
PS it's ok to play with girls but just don t allow them to play dress up with you and dress you in girls cloths ,

Why do you think the population of canada is so small?
I'm not the only one who makes fun of your weather, lol
Most northern states have small populations too.

sell it to us at close to the same price since the dollar is close to par. It might even save us some money on shipping. I will be able to pick it up locally in Waterloo.
There is also another place in Cambridge so I'm lucky in that respect.

SignWave 12-26-2007, 06:56 PM Hi All,
Im Signwave. Im very new to this field and am looking forward to becoming proficient at what I will be doing in the new year. I run a sign shop, im an electrician, photographer, and amoung other things I have a small fab side to my shop where I can MIG & TIG- basically hack , gouge, smash , & pound steel, aluminum and Stainless into a few shapes. I also do a litle auto painting and mechanicing.
Right now im working on a 16 foot welded aluminum boat and this will be my summer fun project to carry me through this winter..
I am in Burnaby BC and As far as I know BC stands for: Beautiful Country British Columbia, BRING CASH, brilliant canadians, etc....
Anyway, Im expecting delivery of a 5x10 CNC router table in the next few days. Im a little intimidated as this will be a first. I have a pile of wiring and construciton to do once i set the machine in place. wish me luck.
I hope you guys wont mind me picking your brains. I suspect my learning curve is about to go vertical...
and as for UPS... I dont much like 'em either.. UPSme off... is what i say when they've shown up at my door...
so thats a little dirt on me... I look forward to the future and happy holidays to all the 'nucks out there eh?
MASTERCAMMASTER 12-27-2007, 01:15 AM I have never lived in a place where it snows. It must be fun to get to play in the snow all the time. I did go skiing once in Mammoth Ca. I went to Tahoe when it was snowing didn't go outside much, too busy gambling.
I have never had any problems with UPS, they are everywhere.
Most of the time when I need something I just go to the tool store.
I guess Canada isn't like California when it comes to commerce.
Whats with all the routers? Who would want a router? We use real machines here.

Gduff 12-27-2007, 01:47 PM What I would really like to see is a list of Canadian suppliers so we can cut through the import problems!
I work at Quality Cutting Tools in Saskatoon. For the most part, for our customers for items under 20 lbs or so, we ship for free. Pretty much orders over $20. This is because we know how bad the US suppliers tend to gouge. The only thing that isn't covered is expedited delivery.

vulcom1 12-31-2007, 11:48 AM Tried the site in Saskatoon and have a question. There flyer does not open and has not been updated for quite a while. Does not help when you are in another province.
The way it is going you can say you are part of Calgary. I can remember when Midnapore was a way out of Calgary along with the Corral Drive in.
John
Gduff 12-31-2007, 12:30 PM Yeah, it is a problem that our website is not fully functioning. You can send us your email address and get on the flyer list. We have been mailing them out for the last few years, and have just decided to send it out as an E-flyer. This is still a work in progress, so as for right now we are just mailing them out. We only now have stores in Saskatoon, and Edmonton. We do have a salesman that does make it to Calgary every now and then , but we run tech support out of our Saskatoon office. If you have questions, you can forward them to Gduff@qualitycuttingtools.ca. As far as questions, I can answer what you ask me. We sell cutting tools, coolant supplies, machinery etc. Our brands include Kennametal, Kar, Sowa, Kingston, YCM, we are the western Canadian Clausing distributor. And much more.
Thanks for the inquiry!

ynneb 01-13-2008, 07:44 AM I have just been alerted to this thread.
I too like to make fun of other countries, but sometimes I get a bit out of hand and offend without realizing. The Internet is a great way of communicating, and is equally a great way to miscommunicate without the use of facial gestures and voice tones. Please consider your texts and how they might be interpreted.
For what its worth, I once mentioned to Art, a Canadian CNC software writer, that I have noticed some great software has come out of Canada. Mach3, RealDraw Pro, and Visual Pinball, to name a few. Arts response was, yeh, it gets so cold here, we snuggle down for the winter, and are forced to write great code. See the cold does have some benefits.
Thanks guys for working with each other to get along.
Regards, Benny
