Ok guys I’m converting my lathe to cnc.
I have be digging in the forum and can’t really
find the answers I’m looking for.

I plan on buying the ball screws from McMastercarr
but McMaster rates them at Rockwell C56 hardness.

I have never tried to machine anything this hard,
can I turn it with carbide?

I would think the hardness would be gone on .750 screw
by the time I get it to .500 for treading and a snout for the motor coupler.

Thanks for your time
Chris

i would think the c56 hardness isnt that deep, should be fine once you cut thru the first
.050,the rest i bet is only c34 or so

check the catalog for specs and see what they say

I wouldn't worry about the center being all that soft as I found out when I cut my keyways. One note though if I had to do it again I would have ground the ends rather than turn.

I may just make collars for them.
