So at the local scrap yard I found a pile of 12 Thompson linear bearings for 1/2 inch shaft. They were pretty dirty, and they had a little rust on the outside, but they were absolutely packed with grease on the inside. I figured for the $1.50 each he wanted for them I could take a chance. I put them on the shaft I got with them and measured maybe within a mil of deflection. How would you guys recommend cleaning out the grime? Right now I'm just using citrus cleaner and have gotten them such that I can push the balls around in the races no problem, but they're still a little chunky. Anything you guys would recommend?

there should be no deflection especial under hand forces......you might just want to replace the races.....you got a nice price though.

I use mineral spirits, lacquer thinner, WD-40, then add new grease.

Boil them, then dry in an oven.
Pack with grease, end of problem.

What should I boil them in? I've used peanut oil to dissolve loctite.

Hi, Spinmonkey,
Hang each one from cord, place in boiling water, move them about in the water to drive out the grease and dirt.
Take them out, let them drain, place in a warm oven , leave for an hour.
Pack them with new grease.
They won't come to any harm in water because they are not left to rust...time period too short.
Try one as a test, you will be surprised how well it works.
Regards, Gordon.

I get used open face 3/4" thomson bearings by the sh!tload for free. They come from a industry which replaces dozens every six months regardless. I soak in heated citric degreaser then break clean, use a light oil till they run smooth.
