View Full Version : "Mach Convention", (South East)...any interest????

I (and perhaps a few other unlucky souls), am considering putting on a 3 day, Friday, Saterday, Sunday "Mach Con" South East. It would be a Convention of Mach enthusiest, in the South East for CNC builders. Puting on classes for various subjects, having machines built by users to show, (kind of like NAMES, but for CNC builders).

Let me know if there is any interest. There will be classes for all skill levels (except C++ programming unless someone wants to step up)......

This is just a "Feeler" post to gauge the interest level....

Okay, I'll bite.

It just depends on when and where, exactly, in the 'South East' MachCon ends up being held.

I'm looking forward to further details,

Where??

The "southeast" is a big area!

PoppaBear10

Well, I am in the TN Army National Guard, and I can get a large indoor "Drill Hall" (about the size of a indoor basketball court at a high school gem), to use for free!!! In Knoxville, TN. But, I am open to other locations as well. At this time this is just a "test post" to see how much interest there would be for something like this, to make it worth all the trouble.
If I can get perhaps 20-40+ people it would be do-able.

You dont have to necessarily live in the SE, to go, it is just a matter of logistics.

Knoxville, TN is definitely do-able as it's only around a 5-6 hour drive for me. The 'large indoor drill hall' sounds like just the ticket and you'll have a hard time finding another location that will beat that price.

Actually, anywhere that's between a 5-7 hour drive is OK for me.

Have you contacted Art or Brian at ArtSoft/MachSupport and asked for their thoughts or input? Maybe try to line up a guest appearance, video conference, or something? Just a thought.

10+ hours drive here.

Thats about the edge of 1 days driving for me. Timing would be a big factor.

Now if you decided to move it to Memphis, I could go nearly anytime as its only half the distance.

Are you advance planning for next summer - Or sooner? From panhandle of FL it would be do-able for me, but not until next summer, I like the idea.
BTW -- Anybody in the Atlanta area? Everyone in the Southeast knows to get anywhere - ya gotta go through ATL!

Vendors are definatly welcome,

I got the ok, go ahead to use the Drill Hall in Knoxville, TN they are willing to also allow us to use extra "Generators" if the existing power supply situation is not enough. I think the Generators can also supply 3 phaze power, I will have to look into that to see what the power types available.

The Drill hall is a Go, (For Now), that could change if a change in deployment status or other training issues pop up. But since it is free I am not complaining to much, I had to deal with the Devil a little, there will be a "recuiter" table there, if this is a go, then at least stop by and say hi to the guy, but dont sign anything........hehehe. We would have to let them think there might be some carrots at the end of the stick.

When: thinking about it right now, I have school age children as well, and I suspect many of you do to. There are Fall and Winter breaks toward nov, dec. but that my be to close for people to schedule in time out of work, since some are driving a full day or more.

Jan-apr is cold here but is also do-able.

I wanted to stay away from the summer since Galesburg CNC Workshop runs then. I would like to offer a convention at or around the other side of the year, and not to close to the workshop.

The numbers of interested here is encourging so far, there are 8 here and 2-3 on the Mach support forum.........

I was considering puttin on classes for:
Basic machine/mach setup
Screen designer 3 and 4
Flash Screens (mabey)
VB scripting
VB Wizards
Mobbus Serial and TCP setup
Interfacing to ADC PLC's with Mach
Brians
servo tuning
panel building
CAD/CAM to Mach

any other subjects that someone else would like to hit, feel free, or even help with the above feel free.
Obviously if you have a portable machine you can bring to show and tell do so.

There may also be a Sign up fee for the event depending on what things I have to rent, or other unforseen expenses at present.

Scott,
I started running NC drills and routers for PC bord manufacturing back in the early 1970s. While in College, worked as a CNC machinist for a defense manufacturer in St. Louis. Got out of manufacturing for about 10 years, then back in in the late 1980s. Ran machines and then supervised a shop until about 1994, then out of manufacturing again. A lot has changed since then, but the basics of metal removal never change.

Maybe lose the title "con" It initially made me think someone was complaining about Mach not doing all it says it should.
Just my opinion.

PoppaBear10
10-23-2007, 09:22 PM
Vendors,

I will need to know what your requirments are to host a "booth", (i.e. power, how many tables (the folding leg picknic style that you can put about 8 people around).

ynneb,

Ok, I fixed the title..........didnt really think of it like that. I have attended many Fantasy and Sci-Fi "Cons" in the past, "Cons" standing for Convention......

But at any rate, it is changed sorry if it caused any confusion from my part

PoppaBear10
10-23-2007, 09:39 PM
Cost: I will probably need to make a cost, for event go-ers, and another cost for Vendors.

Mostly this cost would be for me to cover the cost of renting tables, and possibly more generators/fuel, and other incidentals

Mostly this would be a "Training" avenue for Mach users/machine builders.
I have stated above what I am willing to give classes on, perhaps there are other subject areas that some other Brave soul would be willing to give??

I will try to get a more coherent "class Schedule", and Time frame up as things start coming together. NOTE: This is a very informal thing, and some of the subjects (the depth that we will go into them, will depend on what people want to know about, and how deep they want to go).

Hi Scott,

I represent Madcam here in the US and will hopefully become a Rhino reseller as well in the future. The largest hurdle we have right now is exposure so now you know why I am interested in coming!:)

Madcam 4 for Rhino 4 has many new machining stratagies than the earlier version and more are being added now including some neat new re-machining procedures. I am also in contact with a company that is about to release a beta of a cad/cam to a very limited # of testers. I will be one here in the states and we will probably be looking for two more. Depending on when the show is, I might be able to have that package there as well.

Have you thought about a swap meet like they have a Galesburg?

Scott, I forgot to mention that Madcam is in the early stages of 4 and 5 axis as well. It currently has automatic indexing in the 4th and user defined 5th axis, which I have not even tried since I don't have a 5th axis. I would like to see some degree of automation for the 5th axis and continous for the 4th this next year. I have not been given a date as to when that might take place, but I can wish anyway!

The Convention:

As far as my part is concerned, I am planned on teaching the subjects that I discussed above, mostly to the new people. I remember what a steep and painful learning curve it was, and would like to ease that pain for others.

This is not "Necessarily" my personal Convention, I was just gonna put on the classes if enough showed an interest.

If someone else wants to hold a swap meet then they need to organise it.

If there or other subjects people would like to see taught as they apply to Mach controlled Machines then step up, and put up, or shut up.....hehehehe.

I dont care one way or another if there are Vendors there, or swap meets or dancing girls, as long as they dont interfere with the primary reason,.....learning.

I will probably ask Art, and Brian, and perhaps mabey some well known in the community vendors that have products that a large percentage of mach users use. BUT, I know for a fact that Art and Brian are exteamly buizzy people, and it is very difficult and a pain in the butt for them to get away. I will probably ask them, but you the attendies should realize the above, and not be disappointed if they are unable.

Turmite:

IF I can get things together enough, I will try and get my 3 in 1 shoptask Machine down there, and I will make up some lathe parts and Mill parts from concept to piece, will probably cut them out of Machinable wax or foam to save time. Since my shoptask is small, I dont want to wait for it to cut it in metal. I willl be doing the CAD in Rhino, and the CAM in OneCNC for my stuff, but if you wish to show what your CAM can do, and you have a post processor for Mach3, you are welcome to post it to my machine (or your own machine if you bring one), and cut your part(s) from wax as well.

I would like to know how many attendies plan on bringing there, machines? Also include the power type you need, and space needed to show it off.

Timing of the Event,

First and Formost I wanted to stay far away from the Galesburg event which is a much larger event and one that I usually like to attend. That would give some point between (mabey Nov/Dec but that may be to fast), to Jan-Apr......

I will also say again, if ANYONE would like to help with the Proposed event, PLEASE step up. It would be good to have other teachers of other skills, People with event organizatioanal skills, etc.

I am doing all I can to secure the "Drill hall", discussed above, but there are NO gaureenties, I have turned in a formal request for its use. That request has to go up the Chain of command and then back down to me..........
If I do get approved, it will be a good price for the space "Free", and that is hard to beat.

There are many, many, many hotels in Knoxville area, from Rent by the Hour to Rent by the week.....
The reason East TN peopld are so fat is cause of all the Zillions of different resterants here.........hehehe

You can Email me, those that would like to help, and tell me what you want to do, this includes Vendors (please note if you plan on "raffling off" any thing), or contribiting to the event in some other way. Remove the "AT" and replace with "@"

Hi Scott,

I was on the ph with Joakim from Madcam today for two hrs. I recieved permission to give a seat of Madcam away ($1995) to some lucky attendee, assuming you can get this thing organized and I don't have to do anything but show up and demo the software!(nuts) Nawwww I'm kidding, but honestly the way I use Mach I would be of little use to most people. I would be glad to use Madcam for some sample tool paths.

Yes I remember the learning curve quite well, and am still learning. The curve still isn't easy for me! I will be attending as many of your classes as I can.

I will also be contacting some other potential vendors for some freebies to give away. I am hoping Amy from T.E.A. shows up with a truck load of "samples" he he he.

If this takes off for you guys and we do come out we'll most likely set up something as un-intrusive as possible. Ok here is what I was thinking, and I would like some feedback.

I was gonna spread the classes across Friday, Saterday and Sunday, from 8a-7p, with a 1 hour lunch break.

cost would be $50.00 per person that would cover 3 days of classes (see schedule). Vendors would be $60.00 per Table you need.

Here is the suppossed class schedule:

Class Schedule (with 10 min breaks each hour)

Friday:
8a-10a Basic machine/Mach3 setup
10a-12a Screen designer 3 and 4
12-1p Lunch
1p-3p VB scripting
3p-5p **some one else’s stuff here or Q & A or touch on Flash Screens**
5p-7p VB Wizards

Saterday:
8a-10a Modus Serial and TCP setup
10a-12a Interfacing to ADC PLC's with Mach
12-1p Lunch
1p-3p Brains
3p-5p **some one else’s stuff here or or touch on Flash Screens Q & A**
5p-7p **some one else’s stuff here or or touch on Flash Screens Q & A**

Sunday:
8a-10a Panel building
10a-12a Motor tuning in Mach
12-1p Lunch
1p-3p CAD/CAM to Mach (I’ll be using OneCNC XR2 Mill and Lathe)
3p-5p **some one else’s stuff here or or touch on Flash Screens Q & A**
5p-7p **some one else’s stuff here or or touch on Flash Screens Q & A**

I would need to know in advance if you plan on brining a machine to show, or if you would like to teach a class. I will also need to know your power requirements. Also Email me if you DEFINATLY plan to attend so I can make logistical arrangements on my end.

I will be talking this weekend with the Army to see if there is any answer yet on my request for the Drill Hall.

The 3 day scheduling sounds pretty good. When (month/ day) do you think it will happen? I really would like to attend but I, like several others here I'm sure, need to plan to get away for a few days in order to make it. I would think early December might be a good time since that would be after the Thanksgiving holiday but before everything is in full swing Christmas mode and everyone is tighter for time and often money.

Hi Scott,

I too would vote for after the first of the year but for entirely different reasons. I sent you an email detailing, but basically I want to demo Madcam a plugin for Rhino and if the convention is late enough there is a good possibility I will be able to bring along a beta for a new cad/cam software.

Do you need anyone to give a class on how "not" to use Mach?(nuts) That would be me!

Well after looking at the current responses, I am thinking perhaps around the end of Feb. This would give people time to recover and pay money to the Santa clause bill. Besides in general Feb is a slow month for most folks, and Feb sucks anyway.........hehehe

I still have to get an answer on the drill hall hopefully this weekend at my guard drill, I can get a clue as to where we are on the request for the building.

Perhaps a target weekend would be the last full Fri, Sat, Sunday

But, Lucky the guy who is over the drill hall is a soldier I took care of in Iraq, so the old boy network should cut me some major slackage. It used to be free to soldiers, but now that they found out they can rent the space to guys like the wreastling couch, they feeling a little greedy.....

I should have an answer if I can use it or not, by wensday, and IF they are gonna charge me per day and how much........

Ok, here is the deal,

I can't get the Drill hall, BUT, I can get a double sized classroom. The Class room will comfortably hold about 50 people and a few tables for vendors. The class room has a pull down screen for doing projections from my laptop on.

If you want to bring a machine, I would need to know way far in advance, since space is limited. I will leave about 4-6 tables in the room for vendors if they want, but they may have to share table space with those who may bring their smaller machines.

I plan on doing some "Practical Applications" while we are there, if you have a current project you need help with, bring your problem with you. This will be as time permits to pursue this.

Jason Zeolous of "Flash Fame", is looking to see if he can come down as well.
Further, a C++ plugin guy, said he may come down as well, I am waiting to here on this for conformation.

The classes will be on Feb 22, 23, and 24th of 2007.

NOW having said the above, IF someone has access to a larger space (vendor perhaps), would like to sponsor the space at a Larger "Convention hall" then step up.

Other wise I will say this Class room is the deal (unless someone steps up for more space).

I will take Paypal payments for those who want to register in advace and that will be 50.00, it will be 60.00 for walkins cash only.

Vendors 60.00 per table, (note limited table space above).

Max comfortable would be around 50, everyone sittin real close might be 60-70. Realistly at least from what I have read on the responses, it appears there are only 20-30 people who said they are interested.

To go ahead and register for the event now you can send a paypal payment to my paypal account, (you will need a paypal account). My email is (remove the "at" and remove the quotes and replace it with "@" PoppaBear"at"Hughes.net

Hi Scott,

You might want to let everyone know that Madcam is giving away a full seat of Madcam that has 4th axis automatic indexing and user defined 5th axis. This software is a cam plugin for Rhino and retails for $1995 for Madcam alone.

I might also suggest other vendors think about making some sort of gesture to see if we can fill this room up. Scott all I will need is room for me and a computer. If I can swing a laptop by that time I will bring it rather than a desktop.

Ok I checked out the class room physically, it has several 20A double plug sockets (110v). We are welcom to bring in extensions with multi plug ends. The class room has all solid windows on one wall, plenty of light. There is also a door that leads outside, and that goes onto a nice covered deck that has chairs and tables. Plus there is a paved driveway there that if you want to drive up to the back door to unload your machine into the class room.

The Class room is about 100' long and about 30' wide, ceiling about 12' plenty of room. I suspect that it could hold 60 participants and about 6-10 standard sized tables (folding banquet type).

If you want to attend, you need to start emailing me, and/or paying via Paypal to my email address above. I will compile a list of participants and vendors.

I have a website, but since I am not a web guy, I will have to see if I can add a participante list (dynamic), on that one.

Is there any chance that those who think they may want to come, would at least email me, so I can start a list?? So, far I have seen alot of post here but none have emailed me to be on the participant list. I need to know this for logistical purposes for the Class room..........

I have some Vendors who want to come, but, they would like to give away this, or that, but the numbers would need to be enough to make it worth their while as well....

so, please sound off, instruction are in my threads above how to email me.

Hi Scott, just a piece of advice.
Stop the chatter.
Announce the Venue and time and promote like buggery.
"If you build it they will come."
True there is an awkward period where you dont know the numbers. But that happens with all things. Forget asking for emails of conformation, next you will be asking for phone numbers, and next credit card pin numbers. Just do it.

Set up a registration page, ask for a small deposit, or even full ticket sales.
Get Paul to host a banner in this forum.

Just jump.

BTW. I would only make it a one day event the first time. This way you will get a greater
concentration of people. Judging on how well it goes, you can make it longer the next year. From what I have heard, the Galesburg convention, only really has one big day, and the rest of the time its a bit sparse.

Anyway, just my opinion.

Greetings all,

I got several Emails from potential attendies who wanted to know if I could shorten everthing into just Saterday and Sunday, since it was difficult to get time off on Friday.

So please look over the new proposed schedule, for Saterday and Sunday 23, 24 Feb 2008. I have shortened some of the classes so that I could maintain some openings for other Presenters/teachers. On the shortened classes depending on how the time of that class actualy flows, I may have to limit Q&A to make sure we can cover the material.

PLEASE sound off if this is More agreeable to those who plan to attend.

I will probably try to get with Paul to see about putttin up a Ad Banner here, depending on how much interest is shown here.

Here is the proposed schedule:

Saturday:
8a-10a Basic machine/Mach3 setup
10a-12a Screen designer 3 and 4
12-1p Lunch
1p-2p VB scripting
2p-4p VB Wizards
4p-5p Modus Serial and TCP setup
5P-?? Touch on Flash screens, Q&A, Someone else’s stuff

Sunday:
8a-9a Interfacing to ADC PLC's with Mach (serial & Ether)
9a-10a Mach Brains
10a-11a Someone other class here, or what ever
12-1p Lunch
1p-2p Panel building
2p-3p Motor tuning in Mach
3p-4p CAD/CAM to Mach (I’ll be using OneCNC XR2 Mill and Lathe)
4p-?? Some one else’s stuff, Q&A, whatever

Hey Scott,

May I make a suggestion? I think it might be a good idea to have motor tuning and Screens 3 and 4 time slots switched. I just seems logical to me to have the motor tuning as close to the basic set up as possible since in reality they are somewhat intertwined. Do I need to contact you again via email, since I have not done so since you set the dates?

I have spoken to Amy from T.E.A. USA, which advertises here on the the Zone and they would like to come display, but maybe Amy will read this and chime in!

Madcam is going to be giving away a seat of Madcam which is a plugin for Rhino and the cost of that software is $1995. Go take a look at the following url http://www.madcamcnc.com/start_page.html

I will also be doing demo's of the software, at least to the limit of my ability!:D

Hopefully we can get some other vendors to pony up some door prizes.

Update:

A guy named here as "Xitan" who has a web hosting company, has offered to host the webpage. Further he is a Web-guy, so he said he will do a MUCH better job than the one I did on the google page. He will add lots of bells and whistles to make it more professional looking and easier to sign up ect.

IF, that falls through then TREBLEPLINK I will take you up on your offer.

Amy Strong at TEA, has had discussions with me as well, Her company is gonna do a "Banner ad" for us on this site from Dec to the event.

So, Trebleplink be ready to go with a webpage/signup page if for some reason Xitan is unable to do it. I want to have a link from the Banner Ad to the webpage.

Treblepink: I have already posted a Thread a while back on the Mach support group under "New products", since there really is no "Events" threads........

Marris of Gecko Drive said he is just to buzy to get away, that is a bummer, but I under stand.

Art and Brian: Low, low probability of them being able to make it. I would say no for all practicle purposes. They both just have to much on thier plate to take time and expense out for our little shin-dig.

The Machinable Wax guys (that ad here), said they may come down, and give away and display some wax. If I can economically get my Shoptask transported to the site, I will cut some parts on some of thier wax.

The Mach Yahoo group, is really a message board, there is no real way to advertize there.

I have put a post up on the OH, state CNC builders chapter about the event but really got no response.

So far the only Vendors I have heard from is:
TEA
MadCam (Turmite)
some guy in TX, dont even know what he sells just said he was a vendor
some other guy in CA, same as TX above.

There are still some class space open, so if you want one of those spaces to do some teaching, i.e. MadCam use etc. Step up.

Here is the Address of the TNARG Armory

3330 SUTHERLAND AVE
KNOXVILLE, TN 37939

The Armory has several "Tanks" sittin out in front that you can easily see from the road.

If you are traveling from the East going West on Sutherland Ave, there is "West high School" on the left, and then the next large complex is the Armory on the left. There are two gates to enter the armory, one on each end, take the 1st one, the Army is also on the left hand side of the street.

If you are traveling from West to East on Sutherland Ave., Just look for the armory on your Right. go past the first enterance and turn in the second.

Once you turn in you will see a building on your right, with a "Side Entrance" facing the Parking lot (the first entrance you come to), go in that door, the classes will be in the 2cd Large class room on the left as you go down the hall. If you get lost, call me on my cell phone: The number will be disclosed closer to the event on the Mach 3 convention web site.

Even though some of the parking spaces are marked for this person or that, it is ok to park in them since this will be on a non-drill weekend.

I talked to Gretchen today at Digital Machinist. She is going to check on me bringing some of their catalogs with me as well. We already advertise in there and I have a plug for the convention already on my ad to run in the winter issue (We are running a 1/4 page ad) I also spoke with her about running a press release in the publication. It mails on Jan. 6th, but we would need to get something together pretty quick to go in that issue. If you let me know what you would like included I can write one up for ou if you want, or you can do it... 300 words with a small picture.

Mike, yes, you'll have to deal with little ol' me at the T.E.A. table. LOL! I think I will be the only one coming from my office to the best of my knowledge, so you guys better go easy on me. I'm working on putting together some good discounts and what kind of goodies I can give away or have drawings for.

OK,

It is official, CHRIS (Trebleplink), will be the Event organization and logistacal point of contact person. He is FAR, FAR better than I would ever be even on a good day......

He has gotten in touch with Digital Machinist mag, and we are going to run an ad as well.

So Vendors please go through Chris for your questions regarding presenting your product/tables etc.

We both want to STRONGLY discourage Walkins so the price of a walk in has been raised to 75 dollars. The reason we want to discourge walkins is to get a handle on numbers coming so we can allocate the proper resources.

Participants: Chris and I will try to get together a "packet" that will enclude event outline, name tag, and other odds and ends.

Please be patient with us, now that Chris is on board and there is a seasoned event presenter at the helm, things are shaping up quickly.

Vendors: If you want to offer something of your product in a "drawing" get in touch with Chris. He will put what your offering on the website to perhaps draw further interest.

HELP: As Chris pointed out to me, if any of you would be willing to donate some of your time (if you live close enough) to help with the event details. I have a few request out to friends to see if they would help as well. I might see if I can get some of the Youth from my Church to help out with the "scut work", i.e. collecting money, guiding people, doing this or that, making signs to guide people to the event, etc., while the classes are going on.

The arrangements for the Mach3 CNC Convention Southeast are coming together nicely. We currently have more than enough participants for a great event, sponsors, and a prize table worth several thousand dollars in CNC software and related stuff.

We have set February 8, 2008 as the deadline for pre-registration at $50. After this date, the cost will be $75, and will be subject to these limitations:

Seating will not be guaranteed.

No eligibility for prize drawing.

If you are planning on attending, I suggest you pre-register as soon as possible, as space is limited. All current information is posted on the website:

Believe it or not this is good eating even if provided by an army cook...........hehehehe

I will have Junk food for you gotta munch junk food junkies like, chips and cokes and things.

The breakfast meals will be around 3 bucks.

Coffee, dounuts, chip bags, cokes are all 50 cents each.

I was planning on Saterday night that We all Pile up at: S & S Cafeteria or Golden Coral Steak house. Both of these places have a huge and varied pick it your self food bar. There should be something there to please any palette.

Well,

The convention was a BIG HIT, But it was very tiring for me and probably many of the participants who flew or drove many hours and had to go back.
We had a Turn out far more than we had planned, we had about 60 registerants and about 20 walkins......

Being that it was the first one of its type, we have some work to do to make it even more enjoyable next year. We had a WIDE range of participants form guys that had never heard of Mach, to one guy who had been a programmer for over 30 years, and all levels in between.

According to the Feed Back we will do this again next year, but add in the changes based on the feed back Pros and Cons. I only had 12 feed back forms to go buy since no more where turned in than that.

Pros and Cons and the proposed fixes:

The Biggest Complaint was, we need TWO classes running at the same time, one guy teaching absolute basics and another teaching the more advanced stuff. I will see If I can get
"Hill Billy" or someone else to teach the basic class of how to get a machine moving with Mach, G-code, Wiring, and basic functional use.

Space was Maxed out, so next year we will go to a larger "Convention Hall", in which we will have alot more wall plugs, and room to hang TWO Large projectors, one for what is happening on the computer, and one that shows what is happening on the Hardware Breakout boards and example stuff. I will see if I can get tables for laptops to sit on.

The price will be raised to 200.00 for the whole weekend to cover the larger place above and extra staff.

Most of the classes needed more time per subject so, since we will break it up, this will allow the subjects to be extended with some "Hands on" examples.

Hands ON: This was a biggie, so next year we will plan on providing examples of purpose built screens, board wiring, motor tuning, and a Wizard that the class will participate in the build.

PLC: Programming with ADC, No one brought a PLC to follow along (although a few had the ADC software), since you cant use the software with out a PLC. I think I wll drop this and just show some quick view of the ladder and mostly how they work with mach on the modbus. Or, perhaps have an Optional signup class for Advanced users who want to do PLC interfacing with Mach3. (This class will assume you already know how to program a PLC since there is not near enough time to teach that).

Some people complained they wanted to see something cut, we did cut some machinable wax, as the last class on sunday, but some people who had long drives had left prior to that. I guess we will move the Part cutting with Mach to the Basic Class and do a demo on Saterday so people can see.

Vendors:

ArtSoft: Generously provided 3 lic. to give away, which of course was a huge hit.

Vectric: Alot of people responded and bragged, and bragged on "Tony" of Vectric, so next year I will see if we can put him in a longer time slot and provide him with a simple machine that he can cut some foam or something to show his software in action with Mach........ I think the number of software copies that he sold on this trip more than made up for his trip over here to put up with us "Yanks"......... as he said, "Bloody H*ll"........hehehehe.

Mad Cam: He put on a good presentation also, unfortunatly only 2 users where using Rhino, so hopefully more people will buy some Rhino and consider his software as well. I really like the fact that they will be releasing some 4th and 5th axis capabilities soon. I use Rhino, so when that becomes available, I will definatly try it out.

TEA: Amy of TEA was fantastic, she gave away lots of super cool hardware for machines, TEA products are perfect for the kind of machine that the participants were building!

Digital Machinist Magazine: They gererously sent piles of Magazines (the one with Arnie Miners Camera article in it), everyone of them was GONE!! This is a well done Mag, great articles, and targeted directly at our participants.

Arnie Miner "ZarZul": His products "the digital probe with optional tool setter" and "Mach Camera" Where a MASSIVE, MASSIVE hit, his stuff was gone as soon as I showed it, he sent 60 or so brochures and they where all gone, I had to keep one back so people could get his site. NO ONE, could figure out how he could make such cool and well made products for the price he was selling it for. I would have expected to pay 4-500.00 for his probe! His Camara and Brians Vidio Plug-in blew everyone away.

Machinable Wax: Everyone LOVED this stuff, it was a joy to work with. We cut out a 1/2 hiegth Torus (dognut) in 3D, with a mach machine.
This stuff was awesome to use. I will definatly be getting some more of it for my shop. We had several die makers there who said they will be getting this stuff in bulk. One Jewlery maker in Canada really Flipped out over it. I highly recommend you guys try this stuff. This company was super generous, they gave one Sample box to every participant, and it was several nice sized piecies you could do stuff with!!!!!

CNC4PC: Alot of users now want Arturos Mod-bus boards, and his super cool 6 axis pendant.

Special Thanks to:

Chris Scott, this man made this convention the best it could be given our location and resources. His vast experience in doing events was clearly evident every step of the way. With out a dougbt the convention would have NOT been possible with out him. He brought a PA system which saved my voice, and did all the print out, and other Management/Flow issues, it was truely amazing the amount of things that he did, that I didnt ever realize that NEEDED to be done......... Thank You Chris.

Jason "Grand Master Flash" Blake, (also known as "Zealous" on this board"): He put on a Awesome Flash class showing his NEW "Drag and Drop" Flash Screen for Mach Screens. This was a Huge hit. There really is no practicle limit of the things you can do with Flash for Mach. Really looking forward to the release of his Flash IDE "Screen 5?"...hehehehe

Wade Davenport of "Leasure Craft" in Crossville, TN: His company generously provided Lunch on Sunday for all participants, so if you guys need the Best Pontoon boat or custom plastic objects on the planet call this guy.

Greatchin, of Digital Machinist Mag, and Amy of TEA, who both helped sponsor our Ads in the Magazine as well as on the cnczone forums. Also to Paul of CNCzone who helped get our ad placed well.

Aurturo Duncan of CNC4PC who helped sponsor our website, AND, provided the M1, M11, M12 and 6 Axis MPG Pendant to demo at the class. He also provided some break out boards, and other odds and ends.

The Participants: My thanks to all who came and allowing us the priveledge of getting to know you. I met alot of interesting people from all walks of life. It was interesting the questions that came up about this or that. There really wasnt enough time in the day, to answer it all. Like I said this was our 1st one (and my 1st one as well), but now we got a handle on how things need to be timed, and how participants would like to see things covered. There was also a HUGE amount of networking going on, many people there where Buizness owners, or OEMs that found others that had stuff they needed or vice versa. So all in all, it was really great to meet all these wonderful people.

Scott,

Thanks for the opportunity, I enjoyed getting away for a couple of days.
The show was very informative. Wish I could have stayed for the last session but I had a long drive and coming down with a cold didn't make it any easier. I look forward to possibly joining you guys again next year, again, thanks alot.

It was a pleasure meeting many of you - you'll please forgive me if I didn't have much time to chat - dealing with the practicalities of keeping things going as planned was a bit of a preoccupation. We were on a shoestring budget, and could not have done as well as we did without the considerable assistance from our sponsors. I would like to give special thanks to Amy Strong of TEA components -for her continual help.

I hope you enjoyed it.

I have to say the long drive was worth it. Thanks to everyone who stopped by to talk to me about my companies products, and especially to those who took time to explain to me the things that I needed to know to fill in the blanks. Scott has impressive knowledge and a wonderful sense of humor so the classes had a few laughs as well. I appreciate both him and Chris allowing me to be a part of what I consider a pioneering event. I am truely grateful to both of you.

It was nice to meeting all of you, and I hope I get to see all of you again next year along with the unfortunate one's that missed this first opportunity!

... and Mike, you're coming to Knob Creek this year, right? hehehe (flame2)

Well here is a vidio of the 5 axis jog learn spinning lathe in action!!!

YouTube - 5 Axis Jog-Learn Spinning Lathe Mach3 in action

The vidio is called: "5 Axis Jog-Learn Spinning Lathe in action"

This is the Vidio that the client I built the control for the above brought to the Mach3 Convention and showed to the Class.
It has the normal X and Z of a lathe, Plus the "A" axis of the ATC turret rotates tools 1-8, and the "B" axis of the ATC tool turret rotates the angle of attack.
There is a "Y" Axis that is a "Backer Wheel" that moves up behind the chuck to put "Flanges" on the spun work. This vid shows a recessed light shield being spun.
It has dual function MPG control, it has TWO standard MPG wheels one of them selects the X, Y and A, the other Selects and operates the Z, and B axis, ALSO there is a selector switch that moves the two hand wheel MPG's to a 2 axis Jog-Ball type for Organic/dynamic curves while programming the machine.

The Crew of "Russels Metal Spinning" built the Physical Machine, and I built the 5 axis control system with custom screens. Enjoy the vid!!
