Hi

I have a brand new machine with a siemens 840d with network interface. When the technicians were at our shop we connected it to our LAN. It gets an ip-address and it shows up in our windows network. I wonder if anybody knows about how to do to be able to transfer files to and from the machine. The dealer tells me that I need a special software but I'm not sure. Maybe there is some other way to do it with normal windows networking methods like setting up a network drive at the machine?

Assign a static IP address to the controller and share out the folder you
keep your CAM files in
Then map a network drive from your PC to the controller
ie-(right click on start-explore-then click on tools-map network drive-when the box appears - select a drive letter - and insert the IP address of the controller to the shared Folder i.e. \\192.168.1.254\camfiles......
check the reconnect at logon box! you should now be able to see the shared folder directly from your PC )
Then just output your files from whatever cam package your using straight into the mapped drive
When you go to the controller they should be visible!!!!!
have fun!

Thanks for your reply. I actually thought that it would be possible to have it like this and I can see the machine on the network. I havent shared a folder yet though because when I tried to look at the machine from another computer it asked me for username and password. I havent got a clue what they could be for the machine. Maybe there's a standard name/password for siemens 840D? I will try to make a shared folder also. Maybe it doesnt need a password then.

I'll be back when I checked it out.

When you share out the folder on the controller you should be able to connect from any PC on the network without a username/password
If you have an IT guy onsite tell him to watch the controller booting up it will give an option to boot into windows where he should have enough rights to assign a static IP and share the folder for you

Great fun this IT stuff!!

I did it today! I shared the workpiece directory to the network. At first I still got the question of username and password but then I made a new user in the machine with a known password and now I can connect to the machine with that user/pass. Thanks pdaly for your help.

Indeed great fun this IT stuff!!
