I need help trying to spin 304 stainless tube.
Im using 1/2 x 18 gauge tube and flaring the front out to .700 at 45 degrees.
Im currently using a 6mm carbide bar with a radius ground on the front like a bulnose in a cnc lathe and forming it out from the inside.
Problem is if I run it dry or with oil it gets very very hot and destroys the tool very quickly. If I run it with coolant it splits on the seam of the tube.
Im fairly new to metal spining can someone help me out with some ideas please?

When I am doing metal spinning I use a brass bar. I had good results with the brass. Larry

Is this kind of operation possible in a standard cnc with special tools or ?

Do you mean you use a brass tool to form it?
Can you plese explain in a bit more detail?

What I mean is take a round brass bar around 14 inches in length and 3/4 diameter. I round the end of the bar. In my case I am usually forming around a forum. I use a tool holder with a square bar mounted in the tool holder, at 90 degrees to the chuck. I rest the bar on the bar mounted in the tool holder, and with the lathe running I pull the bar against the tool holder and the material I am forming. I hope this helps.

Ok so your doin it by hand yea?
Would it be possible to automate it using a convetional slant bed cnc lathe?

I have spun some metal and by the way I am looking at you part the reason is breaking on the back corner is because the material is getting to thin in that corner so to fix that problem you might want to use thicker material are not streech the material so much.you can also bring down some material into that corner by making some backstrokes. the way you can fix the front nipple is you can make a female and a male chuck and just press the nipple then put in on your spin tool and start laying it down on the tool.
good luck and have fun .

thanks for reply i want to monw that the profile of tool path is good enough for spining this part??and also can u understand me with some sketches about back stroke and male female chuck (you can also bring down some material into that corner by making some backstrokes. the way you can fix the front nipple is you can make a female and a male chuck and just press the nipple then put in on your spin tool and start laying it down on the tool.)this is wat u said about backstroke and malefemale chuck system.today i also used 0.8mm thick sheeet for same purpose and this time the sheet is break from start of the angle, after break i check the thickness of that area .the thickness is 0.09mm.plz give me advice or some adress of web site where i can get some basic information about cnc spining and its tool path.

thanks

fsa are you spinning this by hand or buy cnc. spinning by cnc is good if your doing hundreds. other wise you are better spinning them by hand. What I ment by pressing the nipple is first you press the front end on a press with a male and female chuck with the same profile as your spinning tool. do you have any experiance on metal spinning because if you dont you better have a scrape barrel next to you. lol

fsa: it means this topic was not yours and you hijacked it to talk about your subject... leaving Bidged's topic unanswered. This is generally a no-no.

By the way... are you going to post that pleasant thank you to your other 15 posts with the same question?
