Has any one done any tig welding aluminum around your machine?

the radio in my shop gets messed up by ac tig welding. i have not run my tormach yet but i am guessing it will be a bad idea to ac tig while the computer is on.

Have you tig welded aluminum with your machine off with no problems?

my tormach is still in a crate. it will be next week sometime before i get it put together and probably another week before i get it up and running. i honestly don't think any thing will be harmed from ac tig welding if the computer is turned off. i am not willing to experiment with it on though.

Not sure why you think it might be a concern.

I guess he's thinking stray current/voltage from the welding process could easily fry the electronics. Seems like a reasonable concern, unfortunately I don't know the answer apart from better safe than sorry would be my first approach.

the high frequency tig likes to interfere with electronics. mig welding and dc tig doesn't seem to bother anything but ac tig does.

i just looked at a picture in my miller manual and it shows a computer in the shop. it looks like as long as everything is grounded it may be ok. my welding bench is grounded good but i still get bad interference in the radio and my cell phone looses signal when ac tig welding. my metal building isn't grounded near as good as they are showing in the drawing. page 30 and 31 in this link show millers drawing on how to ground everything: link (http://www.millerwelds.com/om/o225389g_mil.pdf).

I have experience in this area.
Not welding...... but repairing the electronics......

I recommend that one does not do any welding around electronic equipment even if the electronic equipment is turned off and not in operation. The welding will cause high frequency voltage spikes which can cause induced voltages in equipment which is not plugged up or operational. These voltages and spikes can and will destroy any static sensitive components like integrated circuits such as processors, memory chips, etc.

Good luck.

I respect the above advice. it's the safest road, for sure.

But in smallish environments, you have to do what you have to do. My TIG is set up about 8 feet from my mill. I have lost a hard drive in my mill, but the PC was rescued from the trash pile, so I didn't chock that failure up to the welder.

I often run my PC based mill at the same time as I weld, and I weld a lot of aluminum - mostly aluminum in fact. I have not yet had any issues that I am aware of. All equipment has been in place for nearly two years.

My Tig is also about 8-10 feet from my Tormach.
I have not run both machines at the same time. But The computer is always on. I did about a 1 hour AC Tig job about a week ago. Computer is still fine.
No problems here.
