Maybe I just can't Google correctly, but I don't really see any lathe's driven by linear motors.

I would think it'd be doable, the power is there, the accuracy would be great due to no backlash and linear encoder feedback.

Is the idea out there? It's definetly in my goals to build a CNC lathe, and drive it with linear motors.

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

I think the reason no one here is really into them is the price.
They are extreemly expensive.
If they were cheap we would be all over them.

I think maybe DMG may make one. I'm pretty sure they make a HMC with linear motors.

DMG makes them and have for a couple years now. Like this one http://www.gildemeister.com/us,turning,ctx420linear?opendocument
