I'm getting an error trying to move my v17 files
from an old Compaq Windows98 machine to a
new Dell Windows XP Home Edition machine.
Error is: BOBCAD caused a General Protection Fault
in module BOBCAD.EXE at 0002:AD66.
Here's what I did. I opened them in the old Bobcad,
did SaveAs to the A drive, then tried to open them
from the A drive in new, Dell Bobcad. I don't think
there's anything wrong with
the install on the new machine because I'm
able to open the generic cad files that come with v17.
Any ideas?

You have to install the program, you can't move a program from one computer to another.

he hasnt moved the program - he said he did a fresh install... :)

im not sure about bobcad at all - is it possible to try and output to dxf or some other format and try and import it into bobcad? otherwise, assuming your software is legit, give them a call and ask what to do - some of the problems result in a techie going: "oh, just change this [obscure .ini file paramater]"

Do you mean that you made a fresh installation on a new machine, and the program works but it does not open the files that you created in the old instalation on the other machine?

With XP you can 'force' the execution of a program in compatibility mode like as running under other MS environment, W9x/NT4Sp5/ME/2K included. I use Pro edition, but I suppose that is true for Home edition too.

Rigth button on the icon, then properties then compatibility, check compatibility mode and choose environment.


Probably this is not the real solution but you can give it a try.

Thats an interesting one, the only thing I can think of is checking the floppy disk, try anoter disk maybe and make sure you are transfering a raw .cad file and not a compressed .cad format. The suggestion above about trying dxf transferal is a possibility as well.

I am wondering if the files that the original instalation made were read/write protected.
Does Bobcad have that facility to protect files created by the user so they can be opened only by that user? There are programs that will do that. Do you still have your old computer? Why dont you save the files again and see if there is a read / write protection option. Save the file unprotected.

Just a thought.

I run V17, V18 and V19 on XP Pro just fine and don't have any transfer file issues. If you wish you could e-mail me one of you files and I will see if it opens up over here. If not I can possibly find out why.

The general protection fault you are talking about typically happens when there is a reference in the obscure ini file to an empty or corrupt file. The suggestion to save your work as dxf or igs was the right one to try. You should be able to open the files with no problem as long as they are saved under one of those two file types. If the problem persists, you can uninstall the software from the dell and reinstall using the compatibility mode Ferenczyg was talking about. Make sure you are running the compatibility as the same OS you are using on the other machine, where the files originated.

Hello All,.... spoke with Wren at Bobcad and he explained somthing about a ini file. He said to save it
to a dxf file He also said to ALWAYS use the merge button when opening files.I will try it tonight.
I have been using Bobcad for a long time(1500 files) BUT i am awfull with computers.......Dean

Hello All, I have saved the(original) file as a .asc file (in the old machine i would save as).....put it
on a floppy and the put in the bobcad folder in the new machine using the merge button. Then i will
have to rename them to .cnc to be able to send them to my cnc machines?... I have not done this yet...
