I run a CNC lathe and am interested in purchasing a manufactured bar puller. Up to this point I have fabricated a crude system that works decently enough. My question is is that I have seen these bar pullers on MSC for upwards of $600. Has anybody used these? Are they worth the money or am I better off continuing to make my own?

For what it is worth we always made our own pullers until we had the time to build hydraulic barfeeds for all our machines.

When you are pulling you are parting-off so we simply made pullers that would gripp in the part-off groove. The sequence was to part about 50 to 100 thou deep, change to the puller which was made to fit the parting groove and pull out the bar then go back to the part-off and finish the parting.

Maybe you can answer a question. For the servo barfeed to advance the bar is it necessary to stop the spindle or can it be done while the spindle is running?

I know about different kinds of pullers; some are spring grip, some operate by coolant pressure or air pressure. We just found it easier to make our own style.

We always stop the spindle during advance, but it is possible to rotate spindle if you rebuilt the pusher with a bearing at front..

M-man, can't find the parting off tools that act as pullers, can you point me in the right direction.
Thanks
Dan
