View Full Version : My first build log of my belt drive DIY CNC Machine - PICs
studysession 06-30-2007, 08:31 AM I know it looks like poop. It does work and it is pretty accurate. I also still have a lot to finish on this thing. It has a cutting area of 6 ft by 4 ft. The structure is 10 series 8020 aluminum.
Will have a rotary as a forth axis. Using Mach3 as control software. I still have a long way to go. I have a lot to still learn.
In the beginning I wil start with wood so ordered this chuck here for my rotary:

Faceplate that chuck will screw to and then attach to rotary:

Will make an adaptor for my rotary to the faceplate and use it.

studysession 06-30-2007, 08:35 AM More pics - remember I am not finished. This is a work in progress.
I want to fully enclose everything behind plexiglass when it is finished.

harryn 06-30-2007, 01:24 PM Hi - looks pretty good. Are those drawer or skate bearings ?

They working pretty well. Right now my main consern is the gantry. Trying to see what will give me the most support. Today will do some engraving on 1/4" thick MDF for practice.
rlrhett 12-26-2007, 12:30 PM Studysession,
I see that you have fixed motors, so I assume that the gantry is attached to the timing belt itself at a fixed point. Can you show how you made that attachment?
Thanks,

Sure - over the last three days I re-did most everything. When I find the cable for my camera, I will upload pictures. It is much more sturdy and not just down on the floor anymore. Also a bit smaller. Has a cutting area a bit more than 4 ft by 3 ft now.
studysession 12-26-2007, 08:58 PM Here are the pics. I built a wooden base for it all to sit on. As you can see there really isn't much to it.
The picture showing the mounted z-axis from behind looks a bit tilted, it was the camera not the z-axis. I did not hold the camera straight.
studysession 12-26-2007, 09:17 PM One more thing -
I did not make the bearings myself even though I could have. Not a big deal but purchased them from here:

NEMA 23 282 oz-in stepper motor

Bipolar parallel Volts=1.93, Amps=4.2, Ohms=.42, Holding torque= 2.0 Nm.
Unipolar Volts=2.76, Amps=3.0, Ohms=0.92, Holding torque= 1.4 Nm

studysession 12-27-2007, 08:35 AM Finally have amy issues worked out. The cutting is so much smoother now. Attached is a pic of the sign I am cutting out onto balsa wood. It will be small 6 in by 12 in. Good to put on my friends desk at his place of business.
The software used for rendering is VCarve Pro 4.6

To be honest, I have not mounted the rotary yet. I have two of them and want to use them. Just not had the time to focus on it. Sorry was not more helpful.
djronbxs 10-06-2008, 09:15 AM do you have any plans to share please ?
thanks

Regnar 10-07-2008, 04:23 PM What kind of speeds and feeds are you able to get with the belt drive. I am in the middle of making my tensioner and I am going the same route. Also are you having any problems with the motors stalling? Thanks Regnar
