I am looking for a vise or hold down solution for holding a peice of 31/32 round plastic peice vertically. But it cant be tall. Id like it to be under 1.5" max height. a vise with thick alum jaws would work. I would machine them to fit around the plastic.

Any suggestions please let me know.

This is a pretty standard procedure called vice soft jaws.

Take the standard jaws out of your mill vice and replace them with AL or soft steel jaws. You can just make your own.

Tighten the vice up with a couple thickness of paper between the jaws. Bore your 31/32 hole right in the soft jaws. Remove paper and clamp in your part.

All the vises I am finding are to tall. I dont have much Z axis so I need a vise that is under 1.5" max height off my table.

Fasten a block of 1-1/2" aluminum to the table. Bore a hole for the size of the plastic. Cut a slit into the hole. Drill and tap for a bolt to close the slit and then you have a split clamp that will hold your part vertically.

A minute after posting I thought about doing it with two pieces. Makes it easier to separate the halves of the clamping hole.
