Have you made this yet? I have been looking for size 34 steppers forever! They are pretty rare and therfore pretty expensive on ebay. Do you know of any good sources Vac?
Thanks,
Tei

there are $35 NEMA34 steppers here. apparently 300oz/in. best value ive seen. need geckos tho. or some powerfull unipolar driver.. i may use these for a 3x3x1' gantry router i am trying to amass parts for.

What CAD package are you using to model this with?

vacpress...
Are these the ones you are referring too?

Japan Servo KP86SM2-002 Stepping Motor
2.35 VDC, 1.8 Degrees/Step

or these?

Superior Electric Slo-Syn M062-FD09 Stepping Motor

the japan servo motors. i have no firsthand experience with them - i did start a thread about them long in the past. i have tried to call that place once and i dont remember what happened.. busy signal or something. no answer, cant remember.. if someone orders some, please tell us how it went. ask if they have other steppers laying around!

the thing about these steppers is the idea that 35$ + gecko 114 +shipping is probably like 160-170/axis. for roughlythe same price, i can get those clifton servos, encoders, and geckos! SO its a tossup still... if i use my currently planned rack and pinion design, I think steppers may be better, as they will need lower rpm to drive the gantry at 200 or so IPM.

anyone know about using friction belts to drive a pinion on a rack with a servo? is the holding torque good enough? when milling there seems to be a fair amount of time any given axis sits holding.
this is roughly the design i am attempting to build. im using NSK\THK Rails, rack and pinion gearing, so hopefully it will have a less bulky gantry.. i dunno. im trying to keep the cost around 2k. heres a link to the developer of this machine. they make neat stuff.
