I just purchased my first milltronics this week. It is a 1998 VM24 with the centurion 6 controller and has been upgraded with the High Speed package. It was also upgraded in dec of 2005 to the single board and has 64 mb of ram and 256mb compact flash for hard drive. It had a network connection on the board already and I had the machine dealers service guy install all the correct drivers, and he assured me it was connecting to his laptop before they delivered it to my shop.
Now I am in need of assistance on getting the machine to connect to my pc. I have a dedicated pc that I will be using for the milltronics with windows XP Pro on it. If someone could give me step by step instructions on setting the pc & the machine up I will be one happy camper. I imagine I would need to make a shared folder and then map it as a network drive or something of that nature. I am somewhat familiar with networking windows xp but have no dos experience.
My goal is to be able to load my programs via ethernet to the ram on the controller. My largest programs are about 50mb and I am going to upgrade the ram to at least 128mb.

Please someone help me!!!! I need to start cutting chips ASAP.

You should use a "crossover" cable and connect the mill to the pc directly. No hub is needed.

That is what my plan is. I just need help with netork settings on the pc side and the machine side.

on the PC side use:

client for MS networks

QoS packet scheduler (not sure if needed)

file and printer sharing

NetBEUI

And finally turn off "TCP/IP"



on the mill side it should already be set up to work.

I noticed when the machine is turned on it says that it can't etablish a connection to E:\dell\share. I am assuming that that is the file that the service guy setup on his laptop. Do I just create a shared folder say on the destop and allow complete share attributes to anyone? Or do I need to map the folder as a network drive?

You do have to share the folder or entire drive as read and write.

I do not remember if mapping a network drive is necessary but something tells me it does help. Especially if you want to get directly to it. I share my CAM NC directory as drive F: Then on my mill I can press "menu" and then "drive" and work my way to it.

right now it is hooked up via ethernet cable. I have the network setting as you suggested and a shared folder to allow read and write for everyone. the controller is not seeing it. I think it is still looking for the folder the service guy set up. How do I change what folder the milltronics looks for? Also how do I get into dos command prompts on the controller?

Yes I have that document along with the software and drivers.

I was on the phone with mike who was the best tech support guy I have ever dealt with (milltronics IT expert) for about 3 hrs today trying to get this thing going. At first it was set up using netbeui no luck there error message 31 problem with attatched device!!! So then we set it up with tcp/ip so we could get some diagnostics via pinging etc. Still same error message. the mill is talking to the pc just fine but there seems to be a problem on the pc end with the share. I had to set up a user on the pc with the same name as the mill and set it up as a power user. gave everone full control in the share folder still no luck. The pc has two network connections wireless via usb adapter and wired via ethernet card hooked directly to the mill via crossover cable. ping just fine in both directions but when I load the control or use dos command: net use P: \\computername\sharefolder I get the error 31 problem with attached device. Tomorrow I will try with my laptop and see if I have better luck.
