Having read all the posts here over the last 2 weeks I just ordered Joe's Kit...
I am still reading and have ordered the parts from the parts list... Now to get
the motors and board... Got to love places like this.

I am already getting the neccessary parts together, although I am a little
confused about the black pipe(ie. do you remove the black do you leave it on?)..
and almost overwhelmed by all the motor/board/power choices.. I am leaning
toward the Xylotex set.. but fortunately I have a while to decide..

I got the HobbyCNC board and motors. It was actually pretty fun to assemble. I just finished soldering in the IC chips tonight and I'm kind of disappointed that part is done. :D

I like the pipes shinny so I took it all off, used green scratch pad for the heavy stuff and then used emery cloth to polish them up. Did this with the pipes chucked up in a lathe. I don't believe anyone has left the black on, not sure.
Currently I am running my machine with the Xylotex ready kit successfully as are others, but please read the other logs as a few folks have had some problems that may or may not be attributed to the Xylotex product.
I think everyone that is using the HobbyCNC kit is having great success, however you do have to assemble the board yourself.

All I can say is read, read, read and read some more, this is a great group and they all have excellent information. Ask a lot of questions and you'll find many people ready to help. Joe's support is excellent so you can count on him any time!

The black paint on those pipes will come off. It's just a matter of if you do it before putting the machine together or cleaning it off the bearings as they wear it away in clingy little chips that get evERYWHERE... ARRRRGGGG!! :mad:

Sorry. If you couldn't tell, I did the latter. Hindsight being 20/20 I would have saved myself the aggrevation and done it BEFORE putting the machine together. However there is always the optimistic side of me that sees the part of the pipe the bearings don't ride on as protected from the elements in my dry and insulated garage.

The other thing I noticed is that the bearing will ride smoother if you remove the coating. I think there is some sort of javelin toss going on over at my local Home Depot as all the pipes were beat up and missing paint in spots. Took me longer to line the bearings up with a clear path on the pipes than would have taken to clean up the pipes in the first place. Oh well, lesson learned.

ccsparky and Fifty_ohm I will take you advice and make the pipes shiney, just
wondering though, has anyone tried using stainless or some other pipe that is
not coated with black paint?


ccsparky, I have read those post about the Xylotex cards and the problems
people were having... almost all of them seemed to be some sort of user error..
generally with setting jumpers or adjusting the pots... But you are right.. I am
reading and reading and reading... just so much to learn...

I just finished ordering the parts for vxb.com and use-enco.com.. not as bad as
I thought it would be.. now to go get the pipe and other sundries I need. Looks
like Amazon has the best price on the Hitachi M12VC router that everyone likes.

detail my build once it starts.

Structural steel has the same O.D. as the gas pipes and is very smooth, its just that some people do not have a steel supplier neer them so gas pipes are easier to obtain.

Rick used the structural steel on his and he said it is very smooth.

Hmmm, 4 drivers.... dual motors & screws on the X-axis perhaps?
