View Full Version : Super X3 Upgrades and Modifications
dafowfidy 03-12-2007, 10:06 AM So I would like to start a thread on concepts of upgrades and modifications all of you guys have thought of, wished for, or even done to your Super X3. I just got my machine; I would really like to put a manually operated spindle break on the machine for Tool changes. I am looking in McMaster Carr for a band brake and then the issue, where to put it. Anyway I guess I thought it would be cool to see what other people thought of.
danswaay 03-12-2007, 08:15 PM Hi dafowfidy,
Hm...
Let's see, what would I like for upgrades on my Super X3:
1) Way protectors & wipers
2) Tool changer
3) One-shot oiler
4) 5th axis add on
Regards,
Dan
jfmichel 03-14-2007, 07:23 AM And a 8000 rpm spindle could be nice

SyilAmerica 03-14-2007, 01:09 PM How about 9500 rpm?
Got a gear box coming in 1 week. If it tests out well, We'll put it in the store.
Probably $190 for the upgrade.

Waiting for news about this, it seems curious to run at 9500 with a gear box, please send us pics asap

david_geng 03-15-2007, 05:15 PM if you get that high rpm with gear, you may lost low rpm power. also I feel you only need small cutter for that high rpm, so why not a seperate spindle fixed to somewhere on the headbox?
Moreover, has anyone thought about brushless servos, provided they cost just 20% more than the stepper solution.

You're right David, a separate high speed spindle seems to be a good solution.
I'm thinking about a Kress motorspindle (8000 to 24 000 rpm) about 160 euros.
Before let our friends from Syilamerica showing their solution.
Curious, what are you guys cutting that you need that high of a speed? Brian
DareBee 03-16-2007, 11:01 AM 3/16 "Streaker" in 6061 is around 17,000RPM.
I assume Syil means a switchable Hi/Lo gearbox.
SyilAmerica 03-16-2007, 12:08 PM The additional high speed addons are using R8 inserted spindles. So the 9k spindle is a gearbox that is inserted in the existing spindle. Run out on the existing spindle is a respectible .0004". It's got all the regidity, makes sense to use it. The 30k rpm spindle is air powered. Each spindle only takes away 2" of travel.
I've never tried the add another spindle to the side trick. Maybe that works well too, but I fear for the life of the bearings in those little hand tools.

thackman 03-16-2007, 04:05 PM The rigid tapping option that I have been heard rumors about sounds cool. Now we just need support in Mach3 for it.
cueshark 03-16-2007, 04:53 PM does the new gearbox just fit the x3 or would it fit the x2 too? thanks greg
SyilAmerica 03-16-2007, 11:04 PM Gearbox would only be X3 capable. The 30k spindle will be for both.
cueshark 03-18-2007, 12:47 AM if i understand correctly the gearbox will not fit the x2, but the spindle will? what is different between the stock x2 & the 9000 rpm spindle? does the 9000 rpm spindle come with higher speed bearings? how much is just the spindle & any parts it takes for the x2? thanks greg
cueshark 03-29-2007, 09:14 PM anybody heard anything about the new 9500 x3 gearbox? greg

Anything new on this? I'm about to dive head first into an X3 and would like to finish off my budget with some serious upgrades.
