Hello all,
Does anyone know how to match an inverter and spindle motor for a 1993 fadal vmc 20 non-ridged tap, my service man said the inverter was bad but the spindle motor was like new, but since the drive was obsolete (mitsubishi freqrol z300) I would have to change the spindle motor also, he says i need an inv-0056 inverter plus the new motor plus the labor is going to be 8-9k .
does that sound right?
thanks

you should have no trouble putting in any number of off-the-shelf VFDs, esp without rigid and without tool load compensation.
Not sure why a replacement inverter requires a new motor? I sure don't think that's right.
My VMC40 arrived with a dead inverter, was replaced with a newer model (Baldor), no change to the motor, works pretty well. Nowhere near $8k!!! (and covered by warranty, too)

You can't compare a VMC 20 and VMC 40;
What rpm is the spindle and what horsepower is the spindle motor ?

The motor tag says rpm 1180 and 5 hp, the max spindle speed is 6500 or 7500rpms its a baldor motor the inverter thats bad is a mitsubish1 fr-z320-3.7k-ul
5hp

For a 5Hp 7500 rpm the replacement is a Yaskawa inverter
(Fadal part # inv-0076) price $1766.52 USD, plus core charge.
I've replaced these and its very easy. Just plug and play.
For a 5HP 6500 rpm the replacement is part number INV-0055.
price about $4800.00.
I've also replaced these but I did not use a fadal inverter but replaced it with an inverter straight from Baldor (H2 model IHH205-E) price is less than half of $4800.00. It took many hours to get the parameters right and I feel it wasn't worth it.
It was recommended to me to upgrade to 10,000 rpm spindle, 10HP motor and inverter. This would be costly.
It looks like your service tech offered you to upgrade to 10 Hp motor.
You could try to get the motor and inverter yourself, I'm sure you'd save.
I would like to know what you do decide and how it turns out. Thanks.

I was told that by fadalcnc.com tech guy but our serviceman said the inv-0076 wouldn't work with my motor cause it is a 6 pole motor so i asked why we couldn't change the motor to a 4 pole motor to match the inv-0076 inverter,
he said it might not work right. anyway thats what i'd like to try, do you know what motor would match the inv-0076 inverter?
thanks for all the help guys !

To answer your question MTR-0022 : 5HP, 4 POLE; Y/D 15
I still would like to know what RPM the spindle is and If it has 1 or 2 belt system, Wye/delta?
check the parameters (setp) to get the info.

I finally got the service people to kinda do it my way, they wouldn't go for the inv-0076 + mtr-022 appx. 3500.00 in parts but instead went with inv-0052 + 10 hp motor for appx. 5400.00 thats still better then the original 8-9 k
thanks again for all the wonderful help i'm sure it helped me seem informed when i talked to the service dept.
