Hi everyone,

Just wondering if there are any South Australian active members?

I'm from Adelaide and will hopefully start building my router soon. Nearly finished my design and need to finalise the design as quick as possible as i'm probably heading off to the US for work next week and plan make the most of it and get a heap of gear shipped to my hotel while i'm there. Hopefully i'll save a fair bit on postage.:)

Hi Geoff,

What kind of machine are you building? What kind of linear rails and screws are you planning on using?

I'm also down South - Aberfoyle Park. I've been gathering
stuff for a while now - got an X1 mill and a BV20-L lathe
along with a S/H ballscrew, handfull of Geckos, one of Jon
Elson's controller boards, a Shumatech DRO and some H&F
scales... My day job means I just don't get out to the
workshop often enough unfortunately but I'm trying to get
inspired...

Hello everyone.
I am from Port Elliot and just discovered this amazing place.
I have been looking at Roland EGX'S BUT OUT OF MY PRICE RANGE.
I plan on using the concept for Ceramic design.
How expesive are the electronics and software.
I use Corel Draw quite a lot.
Where do you get the "avionics" from in Australia.????????
Any info from those down the track from me would be much appreciated.

Anyone here know about stepper motors?

I have 2 Fuji's 6 wire, 1.8V 4.8A per phase. 3/8 shaft.

Any ideas on what sort of torque they could be?

Hi All. I live in reynella. I bought a new chinese dovetail drill mill ( $1000 cheaper on Ebay than same mill in Total Tools shop !!! ) Now comes the hard part - taking out the crappy lead screws and fitting ballscrews and then fitting stepper motors. This site has been a great source of information for ballscrews and stepper drivers so hopefully i have made the right choices.Only time will tell I guess..

First plan for my CNC milling unit is learn how to use one.. hehe. Also want to CNC my BV20 lathe. As for what I am really going to do with them, I Hope to make dog agility equipment with them. I also want to make a PCB mill pretty urgently. Prolly want to get an injection moulder as well at some stage and have a go at die making.

Looks like they only care about if you actually win the auction.
Anyone else have the same issue??????

Hiya Guy's,
Silly me put my first post about me in the about Oz forum not here so I won't repeat what I said in there. I'm starting on my first cnc just a little one 420x420x300 mm. Mainly for a learning curve and pcb router. I've got some 50 year old but like new draw slides rated for 150kg's and after cleaning them up and putting some silicon grease in them they move very easily. I also got a 12' length of 1/2"x6 tpi acme threaded bar and I'll screwcut some pfte nuts and split them for backlash free nuts. My finally sent those straight thru parrallel cables so now I can start playing with some steppers and I'll be programming a 16f pic with my own code as the translator. Fun times ahead and when I get something solid going I'll make a new thread to log my progress.

Cheers Bryan

G'day fella's, my first post. Yes another Sth Aussie here in St.Marys Adelaide. I have just started designing my first machine and doing the usual pro's and con's of projects like this. I'm going to go with a fixed gantry design as I want to maintain rigidity throughout the rig. I already have a pair of linear rails,1200 long, with 4 cars. I will try to achieve Z axis movement of 300mm but I reckon it will flex to much. 175 to 225 might be more realistic. I'm throwing a few designs together in SolidWorks and will post some pics once they are more complete.

Redwood Park! we are close... I'm in Banksia Park, I just look at all this in wonderment. I wonder if I could ever build the electonic side of a CNC machine. I have some machine carcases that would/might be good starting points, but just dream that perhaps in retirement I could give it all a try.

I have a very old NEC APC which runs EZCAM software, which I find great for doing 2D profiling. O pc is running and I have a spare too as backup, prox 1981 vintage with the two big 8" floppy drives, but the spare pc has blown the high tension transformer for the colour display. Anyone know where I could find parts? The software won't run on anything else.

Hi Guys

I also am from Adelaide and live with my wife in Woodville South (soon to be +1 with our first child arriving in May)

I mention her because she's recently given me the go ahead to purchase a small mill and lathe.

I've settled on the X3 mill which I will eventually convert to CNC but am still a little up in the air about which lathe to buy (from Ozmestore) - looking at the 22" x 10" or the BV20L (any suggestions)??

My focus is really firstly just to get back into machining since the last time I used one was waaay back in High School and then I have a couple of personal projects for my other "toy (http://www.hr350.com)"

Well, it's good to know others from SA are around..

Hoopstar, Congrats on the impending arrival of your first baby! My wife and i had our first last July (hence my absence from this forum for the last 8 months!). I was trying my hardest to get my router build complete before she arrived but she had other plans and came 2 weeks early. I have only just been able to get back into it and am now try to get it done by easter.

VWSatOz, yeah, Banksia park is very close! I was thinking due to all the responses i've had i might organise a BBQ once i've got my router up and running. Anyone interested? (Otherwsie i'll make the trip to Vic for their next one...)

I have been watching a while now with great interest.
I'm in Ferntree Gully Victoria (East of Melbourne)

Ive been involved in electronics as a technician and hobbyist for years now and have a woodwork business on the side.
Its certainly something I want to get into but have no idea where to start.

Is there a section in this Forum for Newbies?
A Getting Started in CNC section?
Or should i buy a book CNC for dummies?

I just wanna make a small one to start with for using with my Dremel.

Any suggestions or direction of where to start would be a great help
Thanks

Hi fellas, Just wondering if any South Aussies are going to Melbourne for the cnc day/ bbq ?

This is a great opportunity to meet fellow enthusiasts and learn about cnc.

There are 3 of us going so far.

Qantas still have seats available. We are leaving on the 6.45am flight arriving in Melbourne at 8.30, and returning same day on the 5.55 pm flight.
Cost is only $75 each way.

Hope to see some of you there.

Hiho,
Another South Australian to add to the mix.
This seems to be a pretty active thread so I'll toss in my two cents.
I'm located at Inglewood. I've got a background in electronics.

I'm similar to many others here. I've started construction of my router. I'm on a very tight budget. My old man is building the linear bearing rollers for me. I'm working on the electronics. Between us I am confident we will build something that, at the very least, will produce a lot of dust and noise. Beyond that anything that looks like a reasonable performance will be a bonus.

It's good to see that I'm not the only mad crazy inventor boffin that my kids and wife think I am.

Matty Zee

Welcome to the zone FieldingBlue!
I finally finished my router a couple of months ago. It was very exciting to see it doing its first cut. What size cutting area are you planning on? Are you building it for anything in particular?
I reckon we should have an SA CNC BBQ later in the year. Would be good to catch up with others.

FieldingBlue

Wow this is an active forum.

I'd really like to come to a BBQ, that's a great idea.

As to my machine. I'm sure I'm not alone in that I initially wanted to build something that could cut panels for a 1:1 scale model of the QE2. After a while I settled down a bit.

I'm now working on a machine that will have a routing area of 700mm by 1200mm by 150mm. I figure that is sufficient for most of the stuff that I am likely to work on. The added bonus is that the machine will fit in my shed.

I'm quite looking forward to the day when I turn the power on, hit the big green button and it starts to move. (queue Lightning and thunder)

Hi all,
I'm another SA local (Woodcroft)
I am going to purchase a Mill and lathe in the next couple of months and found this site when researching which mill and lathe to buy.

I may in the future convert mill and or lathe to CNC, or make a CNC router, just for something to do, It would only be a toy to play with at home.
I work with CNC machines around Adelaide.

I have been installing and repairing CNC machinery for some 20 Years now. A lot of different type's.
I also have worked with various Process control equipment.

Nothing like having a job that you enjoy.

`Lo there Ajax-oz. I`m just down the road in Reynella. I bought a chinese mill and so far have turfed the lead screws in favour of ball screws. Also have mounted ( in a dodgy way ) 900 oz steppers on x and y axis so I could get the computer to make the proper mounts. Biggest trouble is getting the time to get in the shed to complete the project.

Hi Marzan
What type of mill do you have.
I would be interested in your thoughts about it as I am going to purchase one soon.

Time is an issue for most of us. I think I will be lucky as I am planning on setting some time aside each week to just work on my project with in my business.

But i need to get the equipment first.

07-10-2008, 09:21 AM
Hi Ajax-oz First let me state that I am by no means an expert. I am embarking on this whole project as a learning experience. I had only ever used a manual mill years ago for a couple of months helping out a friend to machine some very basic parts. I didnt want to start building a mill from scratch. I figured it was going to be hard enough converting a mill to CNC without the hassle of building it as well. so I bought a geared head dovetail drill mill from Ozmestore on Ebay for $1500 ( which is the same one thay sell at total tools for more than $2500 !!) I spent a fortune on different stepper motors, each time finding they werent going to be powerfull enough to do what I wanted (thats what you get for getting the wrong advice hehe ). I also have a little BV20 lathe to convert, but I want to finish the mill first.

Ajax-oz
07-12-2008, 03:53 AM
Hi Marzan

That sounds like the mill I am thinking of getting same as the HAFCO HM-45. I am getting mixed stories about it at the moment from sales men.

One saying they don't sell it any more due to being very noisy due to having the geared head another saying it is a very good mill.

Others I think don't know.

Off to see some people about it in the next few weeks. it is all fun and games that is for sue.

Selecting the correct motors for machines can be difficult, that will be the next thing I will be looking at once I have the mill and Lathe.

AJ

Marzan
07-14-2008, 05:39 AM
Yer i will admit it is noisy but for the price it wasnt a bad buy in my opinion.I will probably get a better one later but i would rather stuff up a cheapie drill mill while trying to learn how to use one
