Hi All,
I've got a bit of doubt whether the new cnc mill I have purchased is ok.
This is my first experience of both cnc and small mills (I have used a manual knee mill for years), so maybe my expectations are unreasonable, I would appreciate some informed comment.
Its a conversion of a chinese manual mill done by a small company. It was purhased new from them and was not (very much not) cheap !!
When I spoke to the company owner about (what I think) are slow rapids I started to wonder if I was being given accurate information or BS.
The mill has a 27" x 7" table ( 17" x 6" travel) with 15" Z travel. The motor is 600Watt 3/4 hp. It has an MT2 spindle. It has a dovetail column. and weighs 227lb
It still has the Acme screws, but the seller has assured me that they are excelant quality and that the mill will reliably hold .002", which is fine for my current intended use.
I've not yet tested the mill to see if it really will hold .002"
I know there are not definite 'cast in stone' answers to my questions, but I would appreciate some input from people with more experience than myself before I make a 'fuss' with the seller.
My questions are:
What speed rapids would you expect ?
If you were cutting a block of easy cutting mild steel, with a new 12mm slot drill. cutting a 12mm slot across the block.
What would you expect the mill itself and the cnc system to cope with in terms of cutting performance.
Spindle Speed:
Feed Rate:
Cutting Depth:
I'm wondering what you would expect the max to be before the mill showed signs of 'distress' and before the steppers stalled/missed steps. and (if different) what you would expect to be able to use on a regular 'all day' basis.
I know what to expect from my big mill, no real idea what these little ones can cope with. One of my thoughts is that the steppers are not powerfull enough. Any thoughts on size of stepper that should be used on this size mill ?
Many Thanks for any comments, I'm not sure if I'm expecting too much from this machine, or if I would have been better served by doing my own conversion.
John
I have not said what performance I am currently getting as I dont want to bias your thoughts. Neither have I given the name of the company involved as the mill may well be performing well & it is my expectations which are too high.
