Howdy folks. Found this site and there is a world of knowledge here. I thought this would be the place for a question I have.

What are you guys doing as far as programming a standard (inch) tap while using metric programming? We are an all metric company so we have set up our machines that way. Every now and then we have to tap an English thread and we have just decided to hand tap it outside the machine.

Are you guys using tapping heads or attachments? That is the one way I thought this may have worked, with a self reversing tap head and using a feed in, feed out cycle. If what I am thinking is correct, can some one recommend a readily available tapping product.

Thanks in advance.

My name is Louie by the way.

:D

You should be able to convert the imperial threads per inch to a metric pitch or metric feedrate. I do just the opposite for tapping metric pitches while in inch mode.

Do you tap metric threads using the tap pitch directly or do you calculate the required feedrate (mm/min) at your chosen rpm?

We work in metric but we still do alot (most) inch threads..

ex 1"-8nc
1"=25.4mm

25.4/8= 3.175

3.175mm = metric pitch
