View Full Version : Memory issue
nervis1 02-14-2004, 02:49 PM I just got a new memory card for my machine, going to 4 meg from a 128k card. When I check free memory it only sees 233k?
I zerod the memory prior to the switch and reset all of the parameters in setp.
Any ideas?
Oh the card came from CNCpros, who apparently spoke with Fadal and made sure the software versions were compatible.
It seems to work fine otherwise, I'm running a part right now matter of fact.
Try loading a program that's a meg or so, see if it takes it.

nervis1 02-15-2004, 12:48 PM I tried to load one that was 210k and it would not take it. Memory full error.
This is a -4 system, I'm wondering if the -4 is limited to how much memory it can take.
Nervis--
The problem is that you can not use mega memory with a "-4" system. The max you can have is 422K. A "-5" system is required for anything beyond 422K.

nervis1 02-17-2004, 07:17 AM Hey Neal is there a way to run a program from the hard drive on the 32MP?
Nervis--
You can run DNC from the hard drive using the Fadal Memory Manager. Place the CNC side at Enter Next Command. On the PC side launch the Memory Manager and select the "Run from disk" option. Select the drive and directory where the file is NOW then double click on the file name that you want to run. Click Continue. Follow the screen promts.
If you need to do a mid tape start, call me and I'll walk you thru it.

nervis1 02-17-2004, 01:32 PM Does that run through the 422 or do I need to run a cable from the back of the pendant to the RS 232 port on the rear of the machine?
Scott_bob 02-18-2004, 01:17 AM nervis,
We use the memory manager to run big programs from the hard drive. No problem. No external cable needed...
We put them on the hard drive via that cd that you and I both installed in the PC. Remember that option that Fadal said they did not have a kit for... (They would not even quote it for me). And when I called Fadal service dept, they said no one there had ever heard of putting CD in the PC.
I gotta wonder what Neal thinks about the new control...
Keep up the good work,
nervis1 02-18-2004, 08:54 AM Hey Scott. So I load a program to the hard disk, say the desktop from the cd drive. I don't have any problems doing that, how do I configure the memory manager, and the cnc side to run the program? Is this DNC or a run from the memory of the hard disk?
Could you give me a brief walkthrough?
Scott_bob 02-18-2004, 11:08 PM Nervis,
It will be DNC as the program is not transfered into cnc memory.
For that you would have to have enough cnc memory to accept the file... (that is why you get the out of memory message).
It's really not that bad running a program dnc, it's definetly not as easy to do a mid program start. And since I don't run the cnc now, I just program them. Believe me, it's enough for me just to keep up with the programming tasks. I don't have time to get out on the CNC as much as I'd like sometimes.
I think Neal mentioned that you could call him with your questions...
Good luck,
nervis1 02-24-2004, 07:51 PM Hey Neal...it worked! I DNCd my 1st program today straight from he hard disk. Super cool. Thanks for the help.
Scott_bob 02-24-2004, 09:04 PM Nervis1,
What is your baud rate?
nervis1 02-24-2004, 11:26 PM 38400. I used the memory manager to run through the 422 from the hard disk.
Nervis--
I knew that you could do it! I had faith in you. :=)

Scott_bob 02-25-2004, 12:44 PM Nervis1,
Out of curiosity, what do you say to running the BPT program via DNC and see where you end up on the performance comparision?
http://www.cnczone.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2294&perpage=25&pagenumber=3
nervis1 02-25-2004, 07:06 PM Yea I'll do that. I have a -5 upgrade kit coming in a week or so. I'll do a before and after run. That should be interesting.
Based on your charts I'm not expecting to break any records.
Your 32MP on that chart came in almost dead last.
nervis1 02-26-2004, 06:03 PM Hey Scott so where is this file? E-mail it me If you can
Nervis3@netscape.net
Scott_bob 02-26-2004, 06:18 PM Nervis1,
I'll try to attach it here, but i think it's too big...
Yep, it's too big.
nervis1 02-27-2004, 04:02 PM E-mail it to me...addy is Nervis3@netscape.net
Scott_bob 06-21-2004, 11:46 PM Nervis1,
How is it going?
nervis1 06-22-2004, 09:47 PM Great Scott. My change over to the -5 worked fine, I have 4mb of memory now, just ran a program today to make my daughter a sai (weapon for her martial arts stuff) out of a 7X20 chunk of 6061-T6, 60k lines of code, about 1.4megs, uploaded from my cd drive. 60ipm with a 1/2 carbide ball mill 0.05 doc. 6krpm. took about 3 hrs. Now I know that isn't high speed but works fine for my need, and boy is it fun to watch.
I'm designing in solidworks and my CAM is Onecnc.
You ever get that new machine of yurs working with the palet changer?
Scott_bob 06-23-2004, 01:32 PM Nervis1,
Yes we sure did!
Awsome! Would you believe F500. (Five Hundred Inches) per minute?
.500 3 flute carbide end mill at S12,000 ramping into pockets Z-.130 during roughing.
It's a good thing the doors have bullet proof lexan or you would have chips flying accross the room!
F500 for roughing, we use a F230 for finishing the floors at Z-.150, and the walls of these pockets in order to leave a better surface finish. Even at these high feed rates we are still able to make more accurate parts than we did with the old control.
You gotta see this thing to belive it!
World class motion control on a low cost VMC...
By "world class" I mean: smooth, accurate acceleration and deceleration depending on part geometry...
Sincerely,
nervis1 06-23-2004, 05:47 PM Scott when you get a free min, could you video that thing at 500ipm for a min or two. I'd LOVE to see that. I saw your other vid you posted a while back. Must have watched it a dozen times. Too cool.
