We machined 220,000 engine blocks, 212,000 engine heads, and the result was 2.1 million lbs of aluminum shavings, not bad for 27 OKK HM80s and 27 adult humans eh ??

Next time you see a Canyon, a Colorado, or an H3 I'll have you know I set the tools that machined some of the surfaces on that engine :-).

We hyper cube the GM I4 and I5 engine blocks and heads, ALL of them made in the USA.........and out of over 400,000 shipped this year, not a single bad one was shipped :-).

Our facility could easily produce 2x to 3x that capacity, so buy more H3, canyons, and colorados :-)

Oh yeah and our internal scrap rate was .38% for the year.

Management is very pleased :-)

Willbird, Where do they make the Northstar? Does GM make that dual o'head cam 6 anymore? If so , where? I had to shut down the computer an hour ago due to SEVERE thunder & lightening. Really rattling windows & doors with lightening & thunder simultaneous (close). December in Wisconsin? Kinda like the 13" of snow that took down the trees with the leaves on in the middle of May a few years back.

They still make the I6 I think, the I5 and I4 we do work on are modular versions of the I6, I think the I6 is made in Saginaw maybe ??

They have a foam core for the I6 head on the wall at Applebees resturaunt in Defiance, OH

I'm sure you will get some comments about those super good production rates and very little scrap..My question is this, if the employees and machinery are that good, why in the He.. is your employeer going so called broke ? My suspicion has always been the problem is in the boardroom
( GREED), not the employees or their benifits, just plain out right buck grabbin . Your there, what do you think is really going on ?

Richard Zastrow: It was 73 degrees here today, had just a trace of moisture this afternoon, granted due to living at 4500 ft altitude, our nights are pretty cool ( 39-42 degrees),. but the sun always shines..he he.

Impressive numbers!
From a humor standpoint I think I better understand Detroits problem now:
1. 8,000 (220,000-212,000) engines were shipped w/o cylinder heads! (causes customer complaints of insufficient horsepower)

2. Certainly the customers of #1 problem are happier than the 180,000 that got a vehicle with no engine at all (400,000-220,000)

3. over 5lbs of aluminum cut off of each head or block indicates a need for more accurate castings or, heaven forbid, the cutting tool lengths are way off! :)

Seriously, it is nice to hear of US high volume production in something other than war machines.

My Employer isnt going broke Adobe, I work for a co. that is a supplier to the car co.

They have reduced the amount of material machined off since the inception, they made the rough cyl bores 2mm bigger for model year 2007. Some things like the 12 head stud holes count against you for "waste" but no way in heck would you core the tap drill for an M11 tap :-)

The "extra" head castings I assume were for fallout at final inspection at the car co. and for service parts maybe ??. The final machining on the heads is pretty complex.
