View Full Version : Christmas Ornaments?
NEATman 11-20-2006, 08:18 PM Just wanted to start a thread to see if anyone has made thier own christmas ornaments or holiday decorations. If you have, feel free to post pictures of them here, it might inspire me.
My wife suggested that I machine out a star for the top of our tree this year, and possibly some ornaments as well. I'm just surfing to find some different shaped stars and art for this project.

These 2 ornaments should get you in the wife's good books.
Your CAD program will open them.
Please post photos of your results.
ViperTX 11-21-2006, 11:20 AM Someone on here had a snowflake last year....cut from a CD.
NEATman 11-21-2006, 08:08 PM Weldtutor-
Thanks! I'll try out the angel, it looks great. The "requirements" for the star have changed, she's interested in something more abstract and "art-sy". I'm working on tracing a few pictures I've found online using solidworks, and generating a dxf for import into Mach2 for my mill.

I'll try a search for snowflake, and see what I can find here on cnczone.

charper 11-21-2006, 08:18 PM Well, I just bought two balls for my rotational molder to make with my students for Christmas
NEATman 11-21-2006, 08:25 PM ViperTX-

Is your rotational molder a jewlery mold?

This a is slightly more "artsy" star I drew.
It is a star within a star.
The slots between the center lines are removed, & the inner star is given a partial turn to create the desired effect.

Adjust interlocking slots on top of body & bottom of tail, to suit the material thickness you use.
Have fun & post your pics.

Errol Groff 11-28-2006, 10:42 PM How about a winter theme clock? http://neme-s.org/Clock_Pictures/3.htm
I can post a dxf or igs file if you like. The clock work can be gotten at Michaels or other artsy crafty type store.
There are already a number of files here: http://neme-s.org/DXF_IGS_Folder/

charper 11-29-2006, 04:21 AM The files are great, thank you!!!!
What types of material are you milling (or lasering) your ornaments out of:
wood, acrylic? What else?
KANNON 11-29-2006, 10:33 AM I found some more.. I used to have a laser engraving business. The images were engraved and cut out of red alder sheet stock.
NEATman 11-30-2006, 01:38 PM Errol-
Thanks for the great idea about a clock. Looks like you really connect with the kids. All great ideas. Any of the students ever want to build thier own CNC?
I have attended a few NEMES meetings. I've got to get to the show early next year.
Charper-
I'm planning on milling these ornaments out of thin sheet stainless, and perhaps thin wood also. Although for the wood, I need to make a bracket to mount my wood router to the quill of my bridgeport first. The idea first started when my wife asked me to make a star for the top of our tree. Seeing that we are getting a tree this coming weekend, this is moving higher on the project list!
Kannon-
Thanks for even more great files. It looks like I may have to buy more materials to try out all of these great ideas.

The stainless or thin coloured plexiglass would look good.

I have a few students who will be capable of doing anything they decide to put their minds and will to. And some others that we wonder why they are breathing our air.
