Has anyone heard of cnc machining with a robot?
We are been using them at our facility for material handling and part trimming and our currently using them to cut some of our wood pattern for aluminum mold castings.
Still working through some of the bugs, but getting fair results and getting 6 axis ability.:)
They are not very rigid, but we are doing ok for wood, a cutterpath software with 5-axis capability would help us tons.
I have been looking into some of those and I liked delcam the best so far instead of worknc or solidworks/ solidcam.

I just came back from the show in Vegas, STONEXPO, the Robojet, (waterjet, CNC, laser cutter-engraver) really caught my attention. Yes it works on 6 axis, simple software; a real treat for machinist. The guys at the show were from Specialized Engineering and Information Systems (SEIS-Group). Something to really look forward to in the future.

Maybe you should check with them, and see if they can help you with their software.

Hello ViperDM100

Look at both Mastercam and Surfcam for 5 Axis (or more) I prefer MC to draw and SC to machine. 5 axis routing on SC can be done very economically.

How is that working out for you?

What kind of accuracy/repeatability are you getting with the robots? In my limited experience, 6 axis robots that I worked on were good for no better than 0.5mm and the 7 axis robot was good for about 2mm, although claimed to be better. Granted, these were older robots that had some wear.

Some boat manufacturers use HSK63 spindles on robot arms...these setups tend to have lifespan issues with the spindles because of the lack of rigidity in the arm. I worked with a particular customer who was looking for solutions to replacing the spindles so frequently.

In theory, using vibration dampening toolholders should help with the spindle life, but nobody wants to do any testing, since a lot of the old school thinking says "rigid is better" and they want to stick with heat shrink toolholders. Unfortunately, "rigid" also transmits rather than absorbs vibration, and since the arm could not absorb nor transmit the vibration, the spindle takes a beating.
