Currently just on visual concept, Target date to complete this project will be 3 months from now.
Build to saw within 10 thous, Handle 20' material, Program to cut a 1/4" length and press a button and the whole length is done.
Will find a portable bandsaw, build a verticle axis to saw down and retact
and call it 1st axis (z-axis)
The 2nd axis is the part feed axis and the 3rd and 4th axis are the clamping axis.
All axis will use ballscrew and stepper motor maybe the z-axis use leadscrew
to prevent the bandsaw and slide from dropping down.
Will use Turbo CNC software

i don't think there is any way to get .01 accuracy with a bandsaw. I have used that exact portaband, as its called, and the blade will wander all over the place. You would also be limited on the size of stock you can cut as you would be limited by the rather small saw. I would recommend starting with a standard horizontal band saw and then retrofit it to your standards.
sounds like an interesting project.
good luck

I don't think you will be able to get that kind of accuracy either. I think comercial made cnc saws with 1.25" blades can only get a little under .062". The smaller blade will wonder more, the taller the blade the beam strength it has and the less it will wonder. I agree keebler, find like a 10" or so horzontal or swivel saw and the add the stock pusher and hydraulic clamps and all that. At least a saw that size would have a 3/4" or 1" blade.

I think i can achieve that kind of accuracy only if i cut 1/2" aluminum stock and below. I have upcut circular saw and the blade thickness is 140 thous versus the bandsaw thickness of 20 thous. So every 20' length i will save plenty of $$$$. The m/c will have 2 clamps and driven by ballscrews, press against a floating spring slide and the other end press against the material stock. one clamp is fixed and the other mount on the 10" travel feeding slide and both clamp are in line. Not to worry about blade wander off, Ther are reasons why blade wander off, It's due to dull blade, Blade's guide or tension not right or cutting feed too fast. Since the CNC z-axis cutting feed and parts length are programmable it's looks like this will be a great machine where money cannot buy off the shelf.
The machine got to be light weight, When not in use i can put it up on the rack and free up the floor space.
