I am looking to buy a CNC mill, what would be the best? I am looking for about 1997? I don't really want to buy a problem child, but I know that is a possibility when getting a used machine. What brand?

The first thing you need to do before buying a machine, is to determine what you plan to do with it. If you are doing non-production light-duty hobby work (small parts), then you might look at small machines such as a mill/drill retrofit or Tormach CNC. For larger hobby-type parts I would look at CNC knee-mills. If you have production on your mind, you will probably want to consider a machine with a tool-changer; which usually involves purchasing a machining center. I started with a CNC dovetail column mill/drill, and have since out-grown it via larger parts. I am currently retrofitting an old Bridgeport Boss 6 Rigid Ram knee-mill. If you are on a budget and looking to start a business, I would start small and work your way toward a larger machine as you can afford it. First and foremost.........determine what you plan to do with the machine........and then purchase a machine sized for your projects. Just my 2 cents. Hope it helps!!
