I would love to know how a CNC laser works? Can it cut wood, and if so does it burn the edges?

Hi,

Yes it can cut wood. It leaves a bit of black colored charing on the edges. It really does an beautiful job. Here is a picture of some lasercut balsa from one of the kits I sell.

Nice planes, always wanted to get into R/C, are they hard to fly?

That's a good, and very common question. The answer is yes and no. Yes if you have never flown one, no if you have had lots of practice.

To fly one you usually need to be trained by an instructor. This is almost always included in the price of membership at a local R/C club. Most clubs have volunteer instructors.

How much power is need to cut through 1/4"- 1/2" hardwood?

Probably 100 watts. The more power, the faster you can cut. A 30 watt laser works for balsa and thin plywood.

Where can you get a 100 watt cutting laser and how much are they? I know the turn-key CNC laser systems are very expensive, but I was wondering how much of that cost is the laser itself.

I am not sure. I know they are expensive. The odd time they show up on ebay.

As the owner of a Digital Tool 900 series machine, I'm wondering if a laser could be added to this machine, how much $$, and what sort of capabilties I could expect from it?

Here is one company that sells CO2 lasers that can be fitted to existing equipment.

Most lasers are turnkey and come with everything you need.

here are some preowned ones:

The price of a laser capable of cutting balsa or 1/64 ply is just way to high for me to even consider it! Did you purchase one? If so you would need to sell alot of model kits to pay it off.

No, I don't have one. I send my kits out to be cut. Too expensive to own one.
