View Full Version : Haas SL20 'vrs' Hyundi Kia Skt21LM Lathe
scappini 07-24-2006, 01:09 AM We have a Haas SL30 and would take a bit to budge me from getting a SL20 but I have a quote for the Hyundi Kia package which is about $25,000 cheaper, than the Haas.
The Package is for Full C-Axis, Live Tooling, Tool Pre-setttter, Conveyour (sp*), Parts Catcher and latest Fanuc Controller 21 ***.
Can anyone that owns or has worked a late model Hyundi-Kia Lathe advise me their opinion, we looked at Daewoo, Haas seemed better Same deal with Victor, and went up to the Okuma, and still though Haas was better value for money.
Ridigity?? of the Hyundi-Kia.
This choice is a big decision for us, please please help.
Thank you
Have a great day!
GOLETABRIAN 07-25-2006, 04:17 PM We have Haas Mills and a Kia SKT21LMS. The Kia is a copy of a hitatachi seiki machine. Ours has been very reliable and rigid. The only problem we have had is the light went out and it took a couple of weeks to get a new one. We have always stayed away from Hass lathes because the first ones were so bad. I hear they are better now but I can say from experience the Kia is a great machine at a great price.
scappini 07-25-2006, 04:24 PM Thanks Goletabrian
we are very excitied about the kia lathe, what it offers for the price. I truely believe I would kick myself if we didn't get it and when you get those gut insticnts you have to follow it.
thanks again mate
Cheers
have a good day all
GOLETABRIAN 07-25-2006, 04:36 PM There is one thing that is sort of tricky but not not really. When you are setting your work shift be sure you index the tool you are going to set the work shift with using MDI and not the turret index jog button. It took us a while to figure out why we always had to do the work shift two times. That is the only programming/set up issues we have had with the machine.
MojosMachine 08-03-2006, 05:34 PM I dont know about the new Kia but the I have an older Hyundai Hit-15s and a new SL-20 that I bought a couple of months ago. The Haas is not even in the class of the Hyundai. It is a much lighter duty machine. It has had some problems the Haas has corrected but if I could have bought a new 15s I would have. I hope the new Kia versions are as good as the old ones. I dont plan on buying another Haas lathe when it comes time to buy another one.
scappini 08-22-2006, 04:40 PM purchased the Hyundi/Kia, excited, should be here in 5 weeks
Ciao

Congrats! Your going to love the machine.
scappini 08-23-2006, 05:31 AM Thanks, GOLETABRIAN!!!
sixstring 03-08-2007, 06:01 PM My company just purchased a Haas SL30 and i absolutely hate it!!!!I have been programming and running 3 Daewoos(Lynx 200,Puma 230 and Puma350) all with Fanuc controls, and a 1993 Hitachi Seiki for 7 years now.The Haas
will not use any of my macro programs with out going over them and rewriting half of it.Also do not like the machine home position,X0,Z0 at reference return and everything in a negative number from there, completely backwards from all the other machines in shop. Also it won't run simple insert arc tangent to angles,Ex.(X1.00;Z-.500,R.050;A135.,R.050;W-.100).Haas engineer told me the Haas control will only do insert arcs to 90deg. moves and i told him that my 1993 Hatachi will do this and he said you have to use G2 and G3 moves tangent to angles, what a joke!Plus our shop has bought 3 Haas mills in the last couple of years, broke down more than they run!spindle replaced three times in the past two months in the VF-7.Hope we dont get anymore of these boat anchors!!!
gizmo_454 03-08-2007, 10:31 PM Not to get into a pissing match, it sounds like the way you are trying to program that is much more difficult than need be. On the Haas Controller, G02(G03) X1. Z-.5 R.050 should accomplish the same thing as what you were trying to do on the other machine. I could be wrong. But that would be my guess.
It's like the difference between using a Mac and PC. Both accomplish similar things. Just the way you do it is different. When you are used to Fanuc controls, a different control will be just that, different. Doesn't mean it's better or worse. I personally like my Haas mill. Enough so that I am buying a Haas lathe. It may not be to the heavy duty machine that a Daewoo is, or some other machine. But it is, the best bang for the buck, and is made in the USA.
As far as the machines being down more so than up, I couldn't tell you. I beat the snot out of our mill for the last year, and I haven't broken it yet. From my point of view, a company owner, if I had machinery that was down more than up, I wouldn't be looking at the machine as the primary problem. Used as designed, and well taken care of, a machine should last at least 5-10 years without too many major problems.
sixstring 03-09-2007, 03:14 PM We Have Hade This Sl-30 For A Week Now,not Only Is The Thing User
Un-friendly As Far As Programming It Also Has No Power To Take
A .100 Depth Of Cut In Steel,i Thought It Was Going To Stall Out.for A 30hp. Machine It Is More Than Gutless, running 115% Spindle Load.i Can Take Cuts This Size On My 15h.p.daewoo Lynx 200 All Day At 50% Load.my Company Is Thinking Of Sending It Back.from Some Of The Blogs I Have Read I'm Not The Only Person With Same Feelings On This Subject.
Here's my take on this.
I own a 2004 SL10 Haas and a 2006 Daewoo 220a Lynx. The Daewoo is a tractor. You program the cut and it'll make the cut. This is a strong accurate lathe. My Haas is a lighter duty machine. I have a minimill an da Sharp super mini. Same thing. I have to put the jobs on the machine that is best suited for it. I wont be buying any more Haas machines but it's not because of the machine. I gotta think that when you spec'ed the machine, you didn't plan very well the work that was going on it. Also, I usually make more smaller cuts faster. it actually reduces the run time. At least it does in MY shop.
I've never run an SL30, but I HAVE run many Haas machines and many Fanuc machines. For me, it makes no difference because I never save code. I repost from a cam file and just use a different post processor.
I have a customer with four SL30's and three SL20's . They work fine for him and he mostly cuts stainless.
Just my .02
jackson 03-10-2007, 10:50 AM Stick with the Daewoo on lathes, i have never had a Daewoo mill so dont know but i am going t0 look hard at these Shap mills for my next mill purchase i have 3 haas mills 1 mini, a 99 Vf-2 and 06 Vf-2 i like the new Vf-2 and dont mind the older ones but i dont make heavy cuts with them i have a MORI MV-40 fot that
MojosMachine 03-12-2007, 12:27 PM The SL20 that I have isnt worh what I paid for it. It has had more service call in one year than my Hyundai has in 5 years. I will not buy another Haas machine. I have trouble with small parts. It breaks small drills, doesnt have enough RPM to get good finishes on the small parts. Larger parts work ok and get decent finishes but the cycle times are slower on the same parts as with the Hyundai.
