View Full Version : Leave the the Zone to search GOOGLE
widgitmaster 07-12-2006, 08:05 AM When reading posts on CNCzone, do you momentarily leave the Zone to search GOOGLE for an answer or example related to the post you were previously reading?
Yes I do!
No, but it's a good idea.
Why bother!
sbrpollock 07-12-2006, 09:08 AM O.K., I answered the question, (I answered Yes) Now, Why do you ask?
Have you come up with an idea that will make it easier to do?
Or better yet, Are you gonna get Google to pay us for doing this?
CNCadmin 07-12-2006, 09:24 AM Their is a Google site search on the main forum page and on the advance search page as well.
sbrpollock 07-12-2006, 09:27 AM Actually for me, I just keep Google open in a seperate tab.

widgitmaster:
While in CNCZone I do not close it, but I open another program. Often times I open one or more instances of CNCZone. Externally I will open Google or another search engine to search for something in CNCZone, because the Zone search function is rather poor. You can limit your search mostly to the Zone by including "www.cnczone.com" in your search list.
One of the problem search words is DNC . The Zone search finds no results.
Unfortunately googling "www.cnczone.com" "DNC" produces a lot of unwanted results.

daedalus 07-12-2006, 04:31 PM ive got dual head, one monitor for cnczone, one for my googling, so i dont actually leave.
Woohoo, 100th post, no more sweeping chips for me :)
Greolt 07-12-2006, 09:24 PM Do the only sensible thing and ditch IE (chair)
Firefox has tabbed browsing. Why would you use anything else
CNCRob 07-12-2006, 09:52 PM Most of the time I just open a new window also.
tobyaxis 07-12-2006, 10:02 PM I'll have to agree with the others on the "search engine in the zone". I never find what I'm looking for. I split the screen (19" flat panel) with the zone and my home page which searches Google, Yahoo, MSN, and Ask. The results are great. Optimum Online is great for Searching for what you want to find.
I've been wondering about FireFox which is available through Optimum.
Genguy 07-14-2006, 02:53 AM I always have an instance of IE open at the Google advanced search. That is my home page. CTRL+N opens as many instances as I want in the blink of an eye. The tabs are just on the bottom of my screen with IE. :)
Right now I have 8 pages open, 1 Google and 7 CNCzones. I open all of the "search for new posts" pages because they change so often and the search fails if I start reading first. I'm sure others must do the same no matter which browser they use.
JFettig 07-14-2006, 06:50 AM I dont leave any sites to go to any others unless I'm done with them, the solution is called.....
MOZILLA FIREFOX
http://getfirefox.com
its simple, just centerclick on a link and it opens in a new tab, use ctrl+t and it opens a new tab and you can switch between them... I often have over 10 tabs open, its like having 10 browsers open but better.
They also have many good extensions, the main one I use is tabbed browser preferences.

eman5oh 07-14-2006, 02:31 PM I have to agree, tabs are the way to go. I will never go back to IE even when Vista comes out with tabs.

sdantonio 07-19-2006, 09:44 AM Flipping between here and Google...All the time. It's the best way to learn and it helps me to round out some of the ideas people here present (as I posted in another thread prompted by the comment "Just when I think I know what is going on I realize how much I don't understand")
I used to tell my college students my scarcastic view of the American education system.
1. K-12. If you lucky you learn to read, write, do simple math, and play well with others
2, undergraduate study. You find what you think you might want to do for the rest of your life and more importantly you learn what you don't want to do.
3. Graduate school. You study your chosen profession and most importantly you learn how to ask questions and actually listen to the answers as well as use the library.
Welcome to CNC graduate school.
I too, realise now much I don't know every day here when I read a new post and see how many terms I have to look up in google so I can understand the post. See widgitmasters other post on drip feeding for example (here I don't think Google would help because I if you google "drip feeding" I would expect that you would find a lot of bizzare sex fettish stuff). Occasionally someone actually asks a question that I can answer. Sometimes, I just think I can answer the question, and I try anyway. This is when Gerry (or WidgitMaster) steps in and makes a correction. This place is a great learning experience. Learn everything you can and give back knowlege whenever you can.
spalm 07-22-2006, 01:57 PM Google is my home page and I use it for everything.
This is one trick that I use. Enter the keyword “site” then a colon then the URL and then the search words into Google. It will only get you hits from the selected URL. Cut and paste the following into Google.
site:www.cnczone.com drip feeding
site:www.cnczone.com DNC
I also use Google to do my metric conversions. It also does all kinds of other conversions. Try…
2.8mm in in
17.6in in mm
100F in C

Thanks for the tip on FireFox. This is my first real day of using it and so far it's pretty good. The Theme Options and Tools are excellent.
