Is there a general rule of thumb for the diameter your drive screw has to be, based on the length of the axis? I.E. a 3 foot axis Ύ” , 4 foot 5/8” etc.

I would say it depends more on what sort of drive you plan to use. It's all a balancing act.

Tell us your plans, what size table you are planning, and what sort of drive you are looking at, and we will take a stab at it..:)

I plan on the following
Still haven’t decided on exact machine measurements but the working envelope I’m looking at is the following.
X 24”- 48”
Y 12”- 18”
Z 3”-6”

Going to use servos with gecko drives.
THK guides
Mdf reinforced with aluminum angle. I will probably end up eventually rebuilding out of aluminum plate.
Aiming for cutting in the 50 to 75 ipm range with rapids at 100 ipm
