that anyone would honestly recommend and that supports most code one would use?
I cant seem to get Mach2 to work for my homebrew machine and K-cam works okay but a bit limited on codes it recognizes. Would prefer to avoid dos if possible.

Turbocnc, its pretty decent and it runs in dos.
Whats your problems with mach2?

TurboCNC isn't free, though. Free to try, but if you're going to be using it, you should pay the $60.

emc is free and pretty good , it s easy enough to figure out the configurations after farting around with it for a while ,the ubuntu bdi is pretty good ,though i would suggest using it on 1 ghz processor or better
for older computers there is the debian emc bdi or a redhat version of emc made for dumpster grade computers
