I had something go terribly wrong in the past couple of days and I need help. I was looking through some jpg cd's for a particular jpg and during the process was prompted to load from the cd the newest and greatest picture-it from Microsoft. So I did, but this is where it gets weird. I tried to get on my v.17 of bobcad last night and I could not get the program to open unless I did it manually from the c drive. When I finally get it open all my cad drawings had an icon and a jpg extension after the cad ext. So I do a uninstall on the picture it program thinking this would correct it. Not even close. I did a system restore to last week and that didn't help. They now have the correct extension, with the icon but now when I try to open a drawing it says that the program file is not compatible with windows 32 bit files.

What happened and how do I fix it?

I think you have a file association problem. All your drawings have been associated to another program so when you click on them, they want to open in different program than Bobcad. Try going to the control panel, Folder options, file types tab, and change "opens with for your specific file type.

File associations are toast. (Thanks Picture-It)

There's likely some switches used in the shortcut that you'll need to use, mayhaps CNCDude will have some suggestions. You may need to do a re-install of your CAD program.

First thing I would do is remove ANYTHING and EVERYTHING that's Micro$oft, short of your OS if you're using Windows.

Micro$oft thinks that everyone should make their extensions with Micro$oft naming conventions, and don't play nicely with others that don't. It also gets all p!ssy when you assign a "M$" extension to do something else. For example, I use M$ Outlook, which uses .pst files to hold that mail data. I also use Mastercam, which uses .pst files to post process files. So I changed the system so it would open .pst files with my editor instead of trying to import it or open it in Outlook. It squirmed a bit, but after repeated blows to the CPU with a baseball bat, it finally saw things my way.

Besides, Micro$oft makes some of the most in-secure, bloated, buggy, un-forgiving software I've seen. I've also seen it try and stomp out other programs that are not Micro$oft.

I use (for now) Windows OSs, and the Micro$oft Office suite, and that's IT. I don't use thier browser. I don't use their imaging software, and I don't play thier games.

On second thought, whatever happened may have "converted all your drawing files into jpg files. In which case you may have to manually convert all your desired files back into the format you want. It gets foggy for me here.

Ok I now have it maybe a little closer to being fixed but still a problem I don't know how to fix. When I go to my c drive and open bobcad, open the bccv17 folder and right click on any icon then click on properties it says it opens with the program apex12 which is the name of one of my cad drawings. I have tried to find a folder, program anything named apex12 other than that drawing and I can't find anything. How do you remove a program when you can't find it? Now I will be the first to admit that I am pretty much computer illiterate :o when it comes to things like this so any help will be appreciated.

It is my feeling that apex12, although an actual file, has been designated as the association for your files as an .exe file. If you can change the association from apex12 to Bobcad32.exe or whatever program is supposed to open with your files, that may be the answer. Your shortcuts may have to be edited also if you have any.

I was afraid of that.

Probably just need to right click a file(b-cad)"open with, select
bobcad, then toggle to "always use this program to open these files".
I believe thats it.

If you want to get a better view of the types of files you are dealing with, go to control panel, folder options, view tab, and uncheck the "hide known file types" box. This will display the extensions of all your files.

Hardmill I tried that and I can't get it to work. Does anyone have Sorin's home email address? If so send it to me off the board to

?turnercustoms@earthlink?.net% remove the un-necessary characters for the proper link. I am trying to reduce my intake of SPAM!!:D

Turmite, don't worry! Your problem can be set right....
Go to the BobCad problem folder by using Explorer. Go to the BobCad program files, cad files & right click on a cad folder. Left click on properties. Next to "open with" is a change button. Left click on change button. Opens with window will appear. Opens with will open a window (look in) where you can scroll to your bobcad folder again. Double click on Bobcad folder single on Bobcad32.exe
Now the cad files are dedicated to open with INS32.....

I hope that you have success.....

Guys,
it's not a problem on the BobCAD software side, it's Windows.....
Did you know that you can use the BobCAD icon as logo for your cad, dxf, tap & text files instead of the traditional Windows folder style?
I use the blue icon for cad & dxf drawings and the gray for my tap files. It makes it easy to search for cad and tap files that goes together...

Klox and CNCdude the problem is when I go to do the open with change and the window opens to show all the possible programs to open with the bobcad icon is not there. It is a windows type icon with the first part of moe of my program files names as a program to open the cad files with. I went to delete the thing and can't delete it because I can't find it. The only place it shows up is in the opens with window and I can't delete it from there. Looks like I am going to have to reload the program. If so will I lose my drawings and will I have to call and get another # from Bobcad?

Did you click Choose Program then BROWSE in the Open With dialog? From there navigate to where you have Bobcad installed, and select the exectuable.

Reked, I did that and my Bobcad doesn't show up. My filename shows up as the open with and as one of the options to open with.

turmite

ps did you get your handle from riding motorcycles?

turmite

It can be fixed!!!:D You have to talk to it just right and then lay a 6# hammer up the side of the cpu's head!!:D

Ok I didn't fix it that way. Glen from Bobcad tech support emailed me a patch and even that didn't work. I went to the c drive and began the deletion of every file I could find that was attacted to the bobcad folder. I then reloaded v17 and it works great. It works without mycad drawings, my dxf drawings and my tap files but it works.

Now, a little advise from the zone. How do you go about wording an email to Microsoft or better yet a certtified letter to Bill Gates. What would be the chance he would read it?

ps I do have everything backed up and in the safty deposit box but this is still a hassel that ought never to happened!!
