View Full Version : What Is your interest in CNC?
widgitmaster 04-26-2006, 05:46 PM What Is your interest in CNC?
I'm a professional CNC programmer.
I'm a CNC machine operator.
Never used it until I built my own CNC machine.
Never used it but plan on building a CNC machine.
Its just a casual interest, with no plans or expectations.
I'm an Electronics technician who repairs CNC equipment
<quote> CNCzone has pasted the 30,000 member mark! Who knew that their is so many people into this hobby. I'd like to make you aware that the classifieds section has been updated and all the old listings have be deleted and will be cleaned up on a more regular basis. I'm working on getting the photo gallery software upgraded also, which should eliminate any errors that some have been getting.</quote>
WhiteTiger 04-27-2006, 01:19 AM G- None of the above. I did retrofits on my lathe and mill years back to increase production for my business. Couldn't keep up with demand using manual machines even with production grade jigs and fixtures.

dertsap 04-27-2006, 06:14 AM why do some mechanics own beautiful hotrods and other mechanics are happy driving a lada
some guys get off on it while others its just a job!!
i like farting around with stuff ,making stuff , when i started as a machinist helper as my first job in a machine shop i looked at the cnc mills and said THAT is cool , that is what i want to do ,the rest is history (if i had my time back id further my education and be a doctor ,lawyer)
but seriously the posibilities are endless , high speed machining at the last company was a rush , never thought steel chips could fly so fast , like tweaking a hemi ,searching for the ultimate performance ,
to work on cnc for a living is pretty neat , but like all things some jobs (parts)really suck , lots of coffee ,smokes and tylonol
now that ive learned that i can build my own at home relatively cheap , im going to be in a whole new ball game , farting around making stuff ,just need to get this new router done then its rock n roll
vacpress 04-27-2006, 10:54 AM as a futurist and product developer, the idea of self-built mechanized machinery working for me, on my designs is very appealing..
model making\product design...
sdantonio 04-27-2006, 10:59 AM My interest is in simplifying the violin and archtop jazz guitar making process in my shop.
G- None of the above. I did retrofits on my lathe and mill years back to increase production for my business. Couldn't keep up with demand using manual machines even with production grade jigs and fixtures.

I will say it in fewer words; make more money than I could with manual machines, jigs and fixtures.
bkukowski 04-27-2006, 07:47 PM kind of none of the above. I put built but it's more like building..
Lotus14 04-29-2006, 10:18 PM I bought a surplus Bridgeport with an Anilam system from my company. That got me started.
I used to program full time, now I am supervisor over the programming department.
sunfish3409 05-03-2006, 01:09 PM I used to fix the things and one day decided to try them out. How hard could it be? Actually once you get the feel for it, not hard at all. Its just amazing to have the ability to create at the flick of a switch.
machinist39 05-03-2006, 08:42 PM The idea of starting with raw material and making something useful out that raw material, the idea that I created something out of nothing!
ravin 05-06-2006, 11:28 AM Basically i am an electronics engineer but due to hobby i learn about cnc operating and programming in 2000
and now i i am cnc INCHARGE
and now i am learning about cnc retrofitting
chronon1 05-11-2006, 10:12 PM it just kicks ass -- and could make money (though most aren't yet) -- like working with hands and raw materials - putting your ideas/designs into practical real world is a lot of satisfaction .. nice to have control over process and not have to think something up and ship it somewhere for them to take more time than you want and receive something back that you then have to reevaluate ..
ViperTX 05-14-2006, 02:16 AM Well CNC....it opens up the world ....so you can create and build more cool objects!
Jeff Simkins 05-15-2006, 10:40 PM So far, the "Never used it" has the lead. I just want to see the motors turn. Slowly I am bringing the materials and information together. I would have never started such a project if it were not for training from a master machinist. I am fixated on cutting and shaping metal. Lapidary and goldsmithing are my hobbies.
actionman 08-31-2006, 08:13 PM I bought a shop a year ago after being in the trade awhile
the deal was so good I couldn't pass it up(yeah right)
mwalach 09-02-2006, 09:23 PM I started looking into the idea about 8 years ago. I thought I could build something like that...then I did. I taught myself about stepper motors, and programing. Now I have built three cnc machines, and written 2 cnc cam programs. Now I am looking to build a small desktop machine and just play with it, making cool stuff. Also would like to finish my new software.
ajl6549 09-05-2006, 09:28 PM Really, I'm sorta some all of the above. I prog. , do fixture work, route jobs, act., (and I use that term loosely) as leadman, define setup and prove methods. Also I setup/run all sorts of manual type machines etc.:drowning:
grahamshere 10-22-2006, 10:30 PM Im the never used one , heck i never even seen one in real life but i want one. I do intarsia art work for a living and whole sell to many stores but finding it hard to keep up so hopeing like hell it will work out good.
MrWild 10-23-2006, 03:40 PM I have always loved making chips and creating from the ideas swirling around in my head. A developing disability meant asking friends to help with set ups and even tool changes with my manual BP. I finally bit the bullet and got a Supermax that arrived this past Saturday. No more multiple set ups, Now my buddies are coming by to watch the chips fly.
Between the new standing wheelchair and my used Supermax, I have 13k invested. Thankfully the VA bought my 7k chair. Still can't stop smiling.
planar39 12-07-2006, 09:47 PM i program and operate so i didnt know how to answer, i chose program
massajamesb 12-11-2006, 11:49 PM I have been burning metal for several years. I started looking into commercial machines that would do my cutting for me and quickly decided I couldn't afford that. So I built my own, and I now have 2 different projects in the works, with one more to come, on top of my cnc oxyfuel/plasma, which I use quite often.
I am building a HUGE bridge and rail design plasma/oxyfuel/router, and a smallish router. Next on the list is a combo mil/lathe.
agewon 12-18-2006, 07:51 PM The CNC bug bites hard. I use a CNC mill at work all the time to perform a simple, repetative face procedure, and got hooked on learning about it since the first day i learned to do a linear mill G-code. The best thing, and part reason why i am persuing it as a hobby, is that once i become even slightly profecient, i can make just about anything. I am concentrating on software right now so i dont have to learn G-code from scratch, but have made plans for a CNC router using Alibre. Cant wait until i can start production, even though i am a ways off.
busybuildr 12-27-2006, 11:07 PM Do I need a reason ? Can't I just have one because it's cool ? I just like to build stuff (hence "Busybuildr"), and have built reflecting telescopes, R/C models, even tools (built my table saw base, extension and built-in router cabinet). Currently working on a full scale Ghostbusters Proton Pack for my nephew - how's that for varied interests ?
marcov 02-12-2007, 05:56 PM this is my interrest Im planing to built a router for my self.
Any advice?
thanks.
sparkyone 03-13-2007, 06:14 AM My job is a technician, I repair big cnc machines ie Morbidelli,Biesie,Homag Bazz, Anderson, Scm as well as other cnc type machines for the woodwork industry. But I love playing with stepper motors. I have built a cnc foam cutter and currently working on a 3axis router on a small scale.
My hobby is building and flying remote control aircraft.
Lotus14 06-10-2007, 05:24 PM A company I used to work for was unloading old machine tools, and I bought a Bridgeport with Anilam Crusader II, and they threw in all the software, books and blueprints.
Price was cheaper than building my own, so that is my interest; but I'm by no means a professional.
9lrac9 08-30-2007, 09:32 PM 28 years as a Tool & Die Maker Jig & Fixture/ Welder. I was doing a project for myself and I wanted to do and inside Rad with multi steps. Man I tried with my router I really did, and I just could not hold any kind of tolerence, and I wanted a bunch of parts. I found after 6 months online and talking to 50 different people, a K2CNC with Mach3, WOW are my Rads nice now. And I can make loads of them. Plus I'am still trying to learn mastercam that will help a lot more. My passion for learing to programm and push the cycle start and make parts is an absolute nut off. What a retirement tool this machine can be.And there are so many clever guys on the zone. Talent zone is what we should call this. Hands free, and thinking in 3D, is where it's at...

victorofga 09-01-2007, 02:26 PM hard to decide what is my interest, to operate, to programming both of is exciting... after several year on conventional machines it's just a vacation, when the program is ready and the machine do what exactly need... less so called testpieces:-))))
what is really interest that 's the optimalization, i mean where is not only a few object, pockets on one workpices, but where the elements close to the hundreds or more
anyway the past can help me, because the experience, what a tool can stand or where should be the limit in one pass that came greatly when i just used conventional machines.. even to find out a feedrate.... or just to fix a workpiece.... somehow the wise not so universal.... i like better to clamping stuff...
ROB C 10-09-2007, 11:38 PM Have not used one myself but have seen many used. i just needed a new hobby and cnc really interested me.
Hauskie 04-02-2009, 10:19 PM I am a person interested in CNC because I need the ability to make some parts for an invention. There are proprietary reasons for making them myself. Therefore, I need to learn CNC milling and perhaps even more. Seems interesting anyway. I believe your only limit is your imagination.
